Hello, I am trying to replace my livebox with the Belkin adsl modem with Wireless G router. The Modem connects ok and the appropriate lights are lit on the modem, but I can not get any webpages up. The Lan connection says it is connected. Any ideas? I do not have any Orange software on my computer, I did not need it, I just plugged it in and it connected, I did not even have to enter a password. Are there settings I need to change in the belkin? I am a brit in France, I think my user id is fti/xb33***. As the letter is in french I am not sure, it seems to differ from the UK id's. But up til now I have never needed to enter it. I know there is not a problem with the modem as I change it last week for a new one, but the same thing occurs. Please help if possible....
Ethernet cable, I understand about the username and password, I have entered it using the 192.168.2.1 control page, but it does say if it was invalid or not.
I have already shut down the windows and McAfee firewalls. How do I find out the computers ip address? In my previous reply I meant to says it does not say whether or not the login in invalid....

Open network connections,
Go into the properties for the ethernet connection,
Highlight Internet Protocol and click properties,
TO TEST NETWORK CONNECTION:
(Start - All Programs - Accessories)
Open Command Prompt
Ping 192.168.2.1 -t
Control C to stop
For info purposes this command does a continuous loopback ping to the router. Without the -t it only does it 4 times. Its a means of quickly checking connectivity between PC and router.
If no connection will say:
Destination host unreachable.
Check into Network Connections through the control panel. Double click your local area connection. What status does it show? If connected go into the support tab, what does it show in there?
You could also right click the connection and repair it.
There could be a problem with network cable - try another one.
There could be a problem with network card or drivers - first try re-installing drivers - re-boot computer.
If still no luck I would physically take network card out of computer - re-boot computer, then turn off. Re-install network card and allow XP to to find and install it.

OK I will give it a try, you mentioned the livebox, but it is the belkin I am trying to configure not the livebox, I am currently using the livebox, but am trying to change it over to the belkin router. I am currently using the network card with the livebox, so I know that is not at fault. Nor are the cables or routers as I have used Three cables and two routers. The only problem seems to be getting the belkin router to communicate with the computer. If I call up the belkin control page by entering the router ip address in IE, it displays fine, though it says No connection under internet. But all the lights are lit on the router indicating internet connection. Would i have to change any settings for the router, ie pppoe or pppoa or such like on the control page?

If the above fails try this disconnect the livebox go to Start > Run type cmd then click ok in the window type ipconfig /release hit enter then when ur able type ipconfig /renew hit enter can take around 20 seconds then shut your pc down connect your belkin to the pc and power the Belkin up then boot your pc up.

I've probably confused the issue.
The problem is the router from what you say. It does not appear to be connected to internet. In my original post I did say I can not see how you can install a new router without putting in your username and password.
I would start again but use the setup disc for the Belkin.
If you are going to try it manually you will need your username and password. Settings are:
I tried the ping and it was successfull, 37 packets sent and received 0% lost. So there is communication with the router and the computer through the network card. All the lights are lit on the router indicating internet connectivity, but when I try to look up a webpage it comes up page cannot be displayed. What is a MTU and do I need it???? Thanks Keith. Thanks also to Steve I will give it a try now....

It depends exactly what settings are used over there. Some services don't authenticate with a username and password, but with MAC addresses and other automated systems. For example Sky and I believe Be's as well use an alternate system.
