As a new customer, just found out that Wanadoo wants me to put all outgoing mail through its smtp server (appreciate that this probably helps spam blocking etc).
Trouble is, I use a laptop, connected to Wanadoo at home, then every day I go to work, and connect to a different (corporate) wireless network, where Wanadoo is naturally not supported. I then have to change settings to my own smtp server.
Then I come home in the evening and have to switch back to Wanadoo again. Have tried several combinations of password authentication etc, but no joy - the rather helpful chap (yes, he really was) on the tech support line said it was the only way to do it but he knew a techie who found a way around this. My own webhost cannot help me either.
Does anyone know a workaround?
Now I cannot be the only customer who has their own domain/email/smtp server combo and uses a laptop at home and remotely - I upgraded from Wanadoo dial-up which supported my own smtp and if I had known this when deciding between them and BT, I would have made a different decision - it simply is not convenient to think about changing settings twice a day...grounds for a complaint?
As far as I'm aware you should be able to use your own server details while connected through Orange. Unless that is, it's set to only allow connections from a specific network, ISP or connection.
Another option would be to setup 2 email accounts and when sending simply change the account you're sending through. A little annoying but it's not too bad.
since your just having problem only happens when you at work it might be worth logging via the website untill someome comes up with a better idea
I would recommend not using a email program such as Outlook Express at work as even if they get to work as companys tend to log all emails that go though that way and read them with out telling you.
some companys will state that email use might be monitered but some don't.

IMHO, depending on who you're with, webmail sucks - I use a client for a reason, that is so my email (and all other PIM data) travels with me, on my laptop. I've only ever used Outlook at work tied into Exchange Server and then routing personal email via a pop3 add-on. I personally have no concerns about people (companies) reading my email, if it were private, I'd probably not send it.
I'm not sure "a better idea" is feasible - the ideal solution is for Wanadoo to allow me to use my smtp. But as ever, I'll be waiting another 11 months til contract expires before switching to someone who does.
What is crazy here is that otherwise my experience, this time round, of Wanadoo, has been rather good - as in not down-right appalling like many other posters. But it reminds me of what they were like a couple of years back (I've been a customer since 2002 in France) when they assumed the user was a moron, and couldn't fathom out why you would want to use any other email service than wanadoo, or didn't want to install their software.
All in all, bitter taste left, and a reason to complain on this forum....
I use Fasthosts email but always sent via the wanadoo server. I then discovered that Wanadoo email was not reliable (one of their servers is on a blacklist and gets treated as SPAM) and a lot of my customers were not getting email from me. I changed the SMTP server to the Fasthosts one but had the same problem that Wanadoo blocked it on that port. I contacted Fasthosts who were very helpful and said they provided a different port for outgoing email that Wanadoo don't block
You can set up multiple e-mail accounts with most e-mail software.
Or you could use 2 e-mail clients, eg. Outlook Express for work and Outlook for home. The 2 programs will sit quite happily together on your machine.
