first, I just registered, but had a look at various topics over the web, including this site (already helped me out once before).
Since Friday morning I have this really strange issue which I believe is related to the DNS. I had a chat with a friend who's head of IT at my company and he believes it's DNS too.
Basically I did not change any settings on my router nor any of the devices connecting to it (2 laptops, 1 PS3 and a desktop which is the main machine). My router is an Actiontec GT704 wireless which I got from my previous ISP. Note that I never received the livebox, even after several attempts over phone/email ("it's been signed for by your imaginary neighbourgh, really").
I can access all connected devices fine, all lights on the router are ok (none flashing nor red instead of yellow), I can send and receive emails fine (using Thunderbird 2.0 with smtp/pop from gmail), I tried an ftp access via firefox and that works too.
Now windows live messenger doesn't work anymore, my antivirus cannot update (access to the automated update ftp fails due to timeouts), and general web access is down (with the exception of this site here, google and a few select ones). The PS3 can't sign in anymore as well.
I checked all settings on my router and they are fine according to the ones available on this site. I changed the DNS to something else (various DNS settings) and none improved. I tried flushing the DNS on the desktop (main test machine for this issue) and it didn't improve.
A friend suggested I should try a proxy, so I will tonight (am at work).
I must say I have reached the limits of my networking experience here, so I'm at a loss. I will try and find a replacement router to test, but that might take some time.
If anyone has a solution I will definitely buy him a beer!
I've been using OpenDNS for a couple of weeks now, during which time none of the previous access problems have been experienced.
Preferred : 208.67.222.222
Alternate : 208.67.220.220
Thanks nhyder, I will try those.
Other alternate DNS settings have failed, but perhaps they were no good.
Does anyone know if Orange have suddenly decided to override people's DNS settings, but broken something at the same time?
Then again, I'd probably not be alone with my current issue
Hi peeps. The above DNS didn't change anything, and as I mentioned already a mate said it might be a proxy issue. Well guess what, it is the proxy. I added a proxy (from a list of open proxies) to the firefox settings, and tada, the net is my home again... I can't believe what Orange manage to do. I have been with them for 6 months and more happened to me in that time with them then with all my other ISPs combined (that is 7 years in 2 different countries with 6 different ISPs, not counting Orange)...
Anyway, this might help people who have issues similar to DNS problems.
Issue now is to find a reliable proxy... the one I currently use (only one that has worked so far) has a latency from another universe - feels like dial-up all over again.
That is indeed a possibility. I will continue testing tomorrow. Right now is Forza2 time (finally have some time for that!) Thanks guys and have a good evening!
Normally I'd say that problem sounds a lot like the MTU issues cropping up recently. There's details in the MTU settings link at the top right of each page.
Didn't think a proxy would help much but I can see how it could help.
I kinda discarded the MTU, since it's set to the recommended settings. Any recommendations from you perhaps, sicne it might be an alternative to a proxy.
Unfortunately, with and without antivirus on (using "active virus shield"), I get timeouts on the test download, which is not very good I suppose. I tried disabling the proxy, but that results in a complete timeout for the page (as in loading until the end of days).
Thanks nevertheless for the link, I will play about with a few other things later today.
I will try and see if I can fix the MTU instead. The fact that users would have to go through proxies in order to actually be able to browse the net is scandalous in my opinion but that being said, I'm sure this is a drop in a sea of complaints.
Now all I need is to find out where to change that setting Will post any progress later.
