I don't know if this is coincidence or not, but late last night (about 11pm) I decided to follow the MTU settings guidelines and got a marked increase in my performance.
I did the ping test with the packet size to determine fragmentation level. Reduced the MTU on my router from 1492 to 1470 (and rebooted it).
Downloaded DrTCP to my computer and had the settings all ready (MTU 1470, RWIN 37500). Ran a speedtest and got ~3000kbps. Rebooted the computer to pick up the settings, did a speedtest and got ~4000kbps. I then immediately did a speedtest on an untweaked computer and got ~3000kbps. I then tweaked the untweaked one and rebooted and got ~4000kbps.
Although my test isn't fully conclusive because of line conditions etc, doing one test on one computer followed by the other one the other does seem to show a marked difference. Initially I thought it wasn't going to be worth the effort since the guidelines said I may get an extra 80kbps, but I am glad I did now
