Can I just check whether my (newfound!) understanding of broadband is OK?
Background: having been a Wanadoo customer for some years (and well out of contract) in the last 2-3 months have been having particularly bad reliability problems. Probably unable to connect at all about 50% of the time (Battersea Exchange, which is unbundled), and the rest of the time get periodically kicked out.
My understanding is that because my local exchange is unbundled (and has Orange equipment) this is likely to be due to inadequate Orange equipment. Last time I phoned they tried to blame BT, but given that my exchange is unbundled I don't see how this can be the case: am I missing something?
They also tried to sell us this 6 month free, 6 month at 9.99 package (without mentioning the download limit or 12 month fixed period) - and suggested that this could solve the technical problems because we were on the wrong kind of ADSL (?!?) When we called back to try to get somebody to explain this they denied all knowledge, so I assume that is rubbish too.
So: time to switch!
My questions are:
1) Is any of this likely to be just an area problem, regardless of which supplier I use? For example, I have a high noise to signal ratio on my line: is this going to be a problem with everybody, or could it be a problem with the Orange servers at the exchange? As mentioned above, Orange have tried to blame BT for failing to upgrade their equipment: is there any validity to this?
2) If other suppliers will be better, is there anything to choose between them from a technical viewpoint? I am tempted by Madasafish as their offer suits me and they seem to come out well in consumer surveys. I understand that they are a BT reseller: is this likely to make connectivity problems better or worse (or no difference)?
Many thanks - I am completely new to all this technical side of things (before it just worked!!) - and I just want to make sure I don't end up in a 12 month contract with somebody equally poor! I already have my MAC code so I have another couple of weeks to switch.
