Hi, If i get the configuration page up on the wireless network manager using the inventel wireless supplied with the livebox. It show all the available connections in the area. I can only connect to mine, (which doesn't work!) and all the others i need the WEP key. but there is a default connection which has no security. I can get on the internet if i connect to this but is it safe?
Cheers
Shaun
Well you can turn off the wireless security but it's not advised. There is a sort of secondary line of defence but I wouldn't trust it by itself at all.
The security options are in:
Configuration > Advanced > Wireless
You could try the simpler WEP only security first and see if that makes any difference.
The wireless connection is working fine. Its the livebox that isnt. ppp in progress, synchronisation in progress etc. but when i change my access point to 'default' on the wireless network manager and not wanadoo. I can connect to the internet even though the livebox lights are still flashing. It just says theres no security on the 'default' access point. Is it safe to use this access point, to just surf the net.
Thanks
Shaun

AH I understand now. You're connecting through someone else's unsecured wireless connection.
There's security concerns for both sides as you can access their shared resources and they yours. Plus it's technically illegal to access someone else's computer resources (their router and internet connection in this case) without permission.
Yes but i don't know who's it is. On the access point there is a couple of people on Sky , a netgear,a steadlinksys,a 3 com and a linksys and then this one that says default which has no security. I cant get on any others cos you need a wep key.
Well there is a way to find out a little more about the system but as I said before it's technically illegal to use it without authorisation.
When connected go into network connections, double click the wireless connection to bring up it's status. Go into the support tab and look for the default gateway address.
Enter that address into the address bar of internet explorer and you should get the router's config page. This should at least tell you the make of it so you can ask around to find out who's it is.
