Just done this BT speedtest which I have seen posted around here a few times.
I was online gaming tonight when suddenly my connection froze. After a minute or two it came back, but my ping has risen from its normal terrible 80ms ping to over 200ms.
So I quit the game and went to check out the internet to see if my speed had dropped.
Trying to load a page takes a while and downloading something only gets me around 20kb/s, normaly 170kb/s.
IP profile for your line is: 1250kbps
DSL connection rate: 448kbps (up stream) 1728kbps (down stream)
Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 22kbps
Now, I'm suposed to be on a 2mb line, I rarely get the full 2mb speed. I have horrible pings for gaming. Download speeds aren't to bad, I get 170kb/s normaly if it's a good server where I'm downloading from, although this normaly drops to about 50kb/s for a few downloads.
I checked the BT website when I was thinking of changing and it said I could get upto 3mb possiblely. Few months later it said ''Our initial test on your phone line indicates that you should be able to have BT Total Broadband with a likely maximum speed of up to 1.0 (Megabits per second).''
Now I don't know what to think. Is Orange being giving the bad lattency in gaming pings and the random speed loss. Or is it BT's fault with them capping my line? Reducing the connection I can get?
Any help would be great on this please. I need to get as much info as possible and also to try to convince a certain person to change ISP's
Looks like something has gone wrong there. It's not the Profile as that's a good 6x higher than the speeds you're seeing. First thing I'd check is all your cables and connections, try disconnecting everything but the broadband from the line to see if there's any difference. You may also want to try turning off overnight say and see if a new IP the next morning gets any different results.
hi reedy,
i also have Orange 2meg connection (but BTW believes connection capable of 5meg) I think Orange down stream performance between 6pm and midnight has got progressively worse over the last few months. I normally used to get ~1200kbps downstream and 240kbps up in the 'peak' period. Last week, downstream at ~7pm was <200kbps all week, with an all time low of 75kbps! Just a bit faster than dialup. Just checked now 00;30 BST Mon 1st Oct after seeing ur post and measured 1819kbps on tstools.net and 1555kbps on BT speedtester.com, so not too bad. Ping is 68ms. But try to download a file and that's crawling in at ~280kbps from a site that I know can deliver 10x that speed. My patience withj Orange is running out. Time to move on I beleive
Well first of all clearly there is a problem here, however a ping of 80ms is not terrible its about what I would expect and is pretty good. The speeds you are getting would suggest to be a pretty bad congestion issue especially as your synch speeds are about right just under 2meg at 1728kbps. The IP profile is roughly the speed you should be getting this is set by BT not Orange, that is set at 1250kbps and is the approx throughput you should get on a speed test. Basically everything looks fine BTs end, I would say it was a capacity issue on the Orange side so yet another case where they need to get the wallet out and increase capicity in your area.
