Ok. Foolishly I 'upgraded' (yeah UPgraded) to 8mb connection. I used to be on 2mb and on average I'd get a speed of around 1.5mbps.
Currently I'm averaging anything from 448kbs - 1.2mbps
Here is the information taken from my Speedtouch USB modem.
Status: PPP connected
Speed (up/down) 448/7.616kbps
I have phoned Orange 5 times and got the usual spiel.
First they tell me I'm still on a 2mb connection and to phone another department. They tell me I'm sheduled to be upgraded to 8mb soon and to phone another department. This is the PC tech guy who tells me what I already know about clearing temp internet files and cookies. Then I'm told to ring another department.......etc
I try to explain as best I can.
Tuesday I'm connected at 2.2mbs Wednesday it says I'm connected at 7.6mbps They tell me that I'm still on 2mb and I have to wait for a confirmation email. I tell them I have TWO confirmation emails telling me I'm now on 8mb connection. They give me the usual "Peak times..slower, never will be full 8mb..distance from exchange blah blah" I tell them I'm only around 1 mile away from the exchange and my connection is now SLOWER than it ever has been.
Anyway I'm rambling.
Question is, do Orange have me capped? are they lairs? (I think I already know that answer from scouring these forums)
You've been put onto ADSL Max, for the first 10 days the connections can be a bit varied in terms of both speed and stability.
There's a second part that will dictate what speed you will get, the IP Profile, to get that run a speedtest through:
http://speedtester.BT.com/
Your 7.6 meg sync speed suggests you'll get a pretty high download speed as long as it's stable. If/when your profile goes over 4 meg you may want/need to upgrade your modem drivers as over 4 meg can have trouble on a USB connection. Anyway you'll probably get a livebox in the post soon.
Test1 comprises of Best Effort Test: -provides background information.
IP profile for your line is - 5500 kbps
DSL connection rate: 448 kbps(UP-STREAM) 6656 kbps(DOWN-STREAM)
Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 2792 kbps
If you wish to discuss these results please contact your ISP.
If you are experiencing problems with specific applications, servers or websites please contact your ISP for assistance.
Your test has completed please close this window to exit the performance tester.
Notes:
Your line is configured to the maximum rate that it can support or at your chosen fixed rate, this is known as the line rate and would be viewed through your CPE software or in your router configuration.
Your IP profile is always less than the line rate and is normal on any network.
The Actual IP throughput is the average rate that was achieved during this test.

I have downloaded the latest drivers for my modem which said it was 8mb compatable.
