BT Group is expected to announce this week that it has overtaken Virgin Media to regain its crown as the largest supplier of broadband in Britain.
The news piles yet more misery on Virgin Media, which last week revealed that a £25m launch marketing campaign fronted by Uma Thurman had failed to increase demand for its services.
BT's position as the nation's top broadband retailer was lost in March 2006 when NTL and Telewest merged. The cable companies renamed themselves Virgin Media and in the fourth quarter of last year controlled 26 per cent of all broadband internet connections, compared with 24 per cent for BT.
