I was with Wanadoo for years, virtually no problems. Orange took over, did their bloody LLU "upgrade" and I lost connection for a week. Once reconnected I was seriously getting dial-up speeds for weeks, averaging 5KB/s downloads. Only in the early hours (2am-8am) was it OK.
I said to Orange that I was requesting the MAC with a view to migrating. I half joked saying if it was sorted by Friday 11th (a date I set just because I decided to) I'd forget it, stating the hassle of moving wasn't something I wanted.
Guess what.....Friday night - after completely forgetting my MAC request and terms - I noticed my connection was better than ever. It was after midnight so I naturally assumed it was due to the time of day, the same results ovr the weekend making me think the same. Today I got home from work ready for the real test. At 6pm top speed! Even at 9pm (usually the busiest for me) still more or less flat out!!
So, coincidence? Or are Orange starting to worry about the amount of people requesting their MAC and actually doing something?
The MAC expires on the 8th of June. So if they mess me about again I'm off immediately.
Check your speed again tonight and see if higer speed remains. This morning I managed to talk to someone in their UK call center and for the first time, they have admitted having problems with their speeds, especially during evenings and weekends. It is of course your call but if I were in your position, I would not hesitate and leave as I have got no confidence in Orange whatsoever.

They've been telling me they have nationwide speed issues for about a month now.. They've also been telling me they'll be fixed within 72 hours every time I speak to them too.. I think its either a) another line to feed people to buy them time or b) an issue they really have but are incapable of fixing..
I'm losing confidence in Orange daily too.. My speeds looked like they were going to rise at the weekend when my attainable download went up to 1755kbps but come monday it came crashing down again.. I asked for my MAC last week but got talked out of it.. When I phone up next time I'm going to get it..
Good luck with your respective issues and good luck getting away from Orange..
I personally think that anyone who is having any issue with Orange broadband should request a MAC and leave, don't allow yourself to be talked into staying or accept any deal that's offered. Once you change isp you'll learn just how bad Orange broadband truely is. I migrated to Newnet a couple of months ago, speeds averaging between 5 & 6mbps and the one time it went down was detailed on their website and sorted within hours.
I'm not stupid enough to believe this sudden "fix" is here to stay, which is why I ordered the MAC in the first place, to save me time if/when I move on. I'm also making enquiries to other ISP's while I have a valid MAC.
The MAC I've received is a LLU MAC and BT - who I've just got off the phone to - said they can't do anything with it, my existing ISP would have to clear the lines first. So much for BT wanting my custom.
So if I give my MAC to an ISP that accepts LLU MAC's what does that mean? Do the new ISP remove Orange's crap or do they run their broadband through it? Obviously that would be pointless.
check HERE isp's that accept them a lot do now yes they will migrate you to them no downtime
Cheers for the link mate, but how does a LLU migrate work? Do the new ISP clear Orange's stuff? Will I continue to be on a LLU connection? If so is that a good or bad thing?
I'm a PC guru, but networking and the like isn't my forte!!
As for migration, no expert here either. As your exchange has been LLU'd I think an engineer has to go in and sort unplugging your line from Oranges equipment and back into the normal network http://www.ofcom.org.uk/static...ground.htm . (I've not read through this)
I don't think you need to worry about exactly what's done as find an isp that'll accept LLU MACs and it'll just happen, hopefully with no discernable downtime. I'm on Palmers Green exchange which was LLU'd in September last year and had no problem at all migrating to Newnet.

I'm with you on how bad Orange are and how good it'd be to change.. My problem is that I've worked very hard to improve my credit rating after having bad debts when I was younger.. This leaves me very unhappy with just stopping my direct debit and letting Orange try and get the money back from me.. They say if I cancel I'll owe them £220 and I'm buggered if I'm going to pay that.. I don't want a black mark on my credit rating though so my hands are a bit tied..

I understand how you feel but they are bullies and can't make you pay for a service your not getting or agreed on tell them you will see them in the small claims court.

Believe it or not my connection has dropped! And I've had a couple of disconnections since my last post......sounds of "we told you so" ring inside my ears........
Therefore today I've switched to BT, I checked the LLU MAC I received form Orange with a chap on the phone - who actually knew what he was talking about!!!! - and was told it was acceptable. So the previous chap was either an Ex-Orange employee or just stupid, every company has at least one idiot!
So I'm hoping to be online with BT by the end of next week. Obviously I'll cancel my DD before Orange take the next payment, which I'll enjoy doing!
Apparently my wife could not even load test page about 30 minutes prior to this test....

There have been a rumors of an emergency meeting at Orange HQ but this probably belongs to same category as "we are working on it and hoping to solve speed problems in 72 hours". My guess it is option b -
Their speeds will no doubt improve....once majority of users will move on to find another ISP provider
Marky...well done mate...you are free at last...I'm still waiting for my MAC I had to request in writting (long story why) and hoping to be free of Orange crap soon
Same problem here. LLU Wandsworth exchange (london) for 8Meg max
Very low evening speeds, like 56k modem connexion !
Tried to contact Orange. No luck. Said they will test the line but i believe that this will be done daytime when speed is good......so unfortunately i am stuck with 11 months Orange contract !!!!!.
