Got my adsl max service up and running on friday.. on the phone Orange told me I'd achieve speeds of at least 3mb and the guys in the workshop next door to me get 6mb.. Have installed my livebox and it all worked sweet.. took minutes to get going but my line seems to be stuck at 512kbs so my download speeds are around 60..
I've checked the details on my livebox and the line noise seems quite high.. see below..
What do you guys reckon.. I had a nightmare getting BT to put the line in.. think it might still be messed up though.. been picking up someone talking on my line but BT reckoned it was my cordless phones..
Urgh that looks pretty bad. Just so you know the speed advised is purely a guide. It can be wrong when the service is actually put on your line.
From the looks of the stats it seems the line is unstable as you've already got interleaving turned on. To even get to 1 meg your downstream rate would need to be a stable 1152kbps and not dropping below that.
Attenuation is medium/high so 3 meg sounds like the highest you'd be able to get ideally. However your attenuation seems fairly low incomparison to what I'd normally expect for the other stats.
It would be wise to try using the test socket under the faceplate on your master socket if it's the right one. Also try a corded phone and see if that interference is actually on the line itself as that could have a big impact. You upsteam of 256 is very suggestive that there is some sort of problem and interference there as with Max it should be on 448kbps and LLU 288kbps. As interleaving is on I'd suspect you're on Max.
It is possible however that your line won't be able to do much better and you'd be stuck with 1/2 meg.
Just been reading your advice to someone else and you're a very handy person to know by the sounds of it..
I've just reported that I have a fault to BT after checking my line with a fixed phone and still picking up someone talking on the line.. They're going to send an engineer out by tuesday evening..
I know the speed advised is only a guide but bear in mind I'm only about 1 mile from the exchange, possibly 1.5 miles.. Would've thought I'd get better than this.. And as I say the guys next to me reckon they're getting 6 mb although I haven't been round to check..
I will try connecting my livebox to the test socket now and see if it gives any improvement..
I wouldn't be suprised if it is BT's fault though as its taken them 2.5 months of cock ups to finally install my phone in the first place.. They're not exactly my favourite company at the moment..
Thanks again for your advice, I'll keep you posted..
You are connected to the Totnes telephone exchange.
ADSL is available in your area
Your exchange is also enabled for ADSL Max services
According to BT Wholesale, your line should be able to support a 3Mbps or greater ADSL connection via ADSL Max.
Standard ADSL RAG results:
[BT ADSL Code: AEGEGEL] You cannot receive 2Mbps ADSL
[BT ADSL Code: AEGEGEL] You may be able to receive 1Mbps ADSL
[BT ADSL Code: AEGEGEL] You can receive 512Kbps ADSL
[BT ADSL Code: AEGEGEL] You can receive 256Kbps ADSL
You are approximately 2.19km from the exchange (straight line distance).
Also having connected through my test socket my livebox now says..
And here we go with even more.. Got BT line test to work at last..

3 meg looks a touch optimistic from that but you never know when the fault is cleared up you may be able to get more. Also the distances are almost always longer, sometimes a lot longer. Appears your line must go a different route compared to that workshop otherwise your speed would be a bit closer to theirs.

Yeah only slightly better, the downstream rate would probably have gone up simply by turning the box off and on again in it's original position. It's the attainable change which shows your internal wiring, though still having an effect, only makes a minor difference so is ok.
Let us know what BT say and what happens with the engineer. Hopefully things will get better once that problem's sorted.
Thanks for the tip brianthesnale.. Will give it a look..
Well Elhana.. I had my BT engineer out and he tested the line but couldn't find any faults.. He said he had to really witness the noise on the line to do something about it and every check he'd tried came up with no results.. He even tried a few tricks he knew to sort it out and checked things at the exchange but to no avail..
There has been one change since yesterday but its not a good one..
So I haven't even got a 512 line now.. Starting to definitely look like poor value for money at the moment..
The BT engineer reckons I should phone Orange and demand they send out a broadband engineer.. He was just a telephone engineer and didn't even carry a decibel meter.. Nor did he have any real broadband training..
Think I'm gonna give Orange a ring now and see if they can sort anything out but wouldn't be suprised if they tell me I have to wait the 10days first..
And here was me hoping I could avoid Orange customer service..

That can be a problem, happens with some intermittant broadband faults too. It's a real shame he couldn't catch the problem as that may have cured everything.

Yeah those stats are bad. Appears to be pretty unstable. If it was just down to the length of the line, which I don't think it is, then I would have said you'd probably be better off staying off ADSL Max.

A BB engineer would be some help as they should be able to see the line seems quite wild in it's fluctuations, at least at the moment.

They probably will tell you about the 10 day part as it's technically a speed fault which cannot be logged during those 10 days. To be honest at the moment there's little point speaking to them until the time is up.

Not to mention the fact that their systems are down and they can't even do a line test.. and they can't send an engineer till they've done a line test..

Happens on occasion. It's standard procedure to get an engineer once a fault is logged. Gives them something to go on and they can see what's already been checked by the system and at the exchange etc.
Just got through to a very helpful guy in customer support at Orange..
Told me that Orange are experiencing a network wide speed problem that their engineers are trying to address at the moment.. One of the symptoms is high noise levels on lines.. Its only effecting certain people connecting on the network and I'm one of them.. He said my speeds should increase significantly as soon as they work out what the hell is causing the problems..
No way of tracking it though as its a one of problem they've encountered in the last week or so..
Sorry I'm forever posting but just done another of those BT Speed test things..

IP profile for your line is - 135 kbps
DSL connection rate: 256 kbps(UP-STREAM) 224 kbps(DOWN-STREAM)
Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 107 kbps
What does it mean by my IP profile for the line being 135 kbps?
Is that the speed the line is set at? Yesterday it was 500 kbps..
And also its a bit crazy that my up stream is faster than my downstream surely..
I hope it is just the fault I mentioned above and Orange sort it.. Things just seem to be getting slower and slower..
Hmm.. swapped the microfilter and a few minutes later I have..

DSL connection rate: 224 kbps(UP-STREAM) 512 kbps(DOWN-STREAM)
Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 114 kbps
The IP Profile is like a speed limit, it's the maximum speed you can go on the connection at the time. If your downstream rate or sync rate doesn't reach certain levels then it can't go upto the next speed. You need a minimum of 576kbps downstream in order to be able to get 1/2 meg.
The profile also tries to keep the connection stable by running at a reduced rate if thats the case. For example if your connection varied between 1 meg and under 1/2 every couple of days the system would keep it set at the 135kbps speed as that way it's stable. It's one of the reasons for long lines it's best to stay off Max as it can sacrifice stability to try to go faster and on some occasions that stability means you get less than what you may have had before.
