pure speculation on my part - but i cant help noticing that a lot of the people reporting being disconnected are old time Freeserve users.
might these disconnects be a way for Orange to clear out us old timers in favour of the pleb newbie masses that are getting "free" broadband with their phone, and only download a few meg per month - as opposed to the Gigs of stuff we experienced users do each month..

just a thought.
I was originally a freeserve customer, had identical experience to many reported here since being upgraded to 8Mb last July (using Speedtouch modem even with updated drivers experienced consistently low speed, constant disconnection, system freezing on upload, email problems, utterly hopeless customer and technical service support) have just migrated painlessly to Waitrose (with LLU MAC) and discovered consistently better speeds, no disconnects and customer service staff who are courteous and who speak comprehensible English. I'd advise anyone in the same position not to waste another moment with Orange and do the same. The more dissatisfied Orange customers who vote with their feet, the better.

You have a point, in the spirit of consumerism one would expect Orange to care for the customers who have been loyal to them for many years- addressing low speeds/disconnections. This is obviously a stupid notion as Orange seems partial to the 'F*** em over, and take their money' school of thought.
I have no hardcore figures, but would it be cheaper for Orange to cease a line rather than upgrade it?
With respect to Orange attracting novices- its certainly working. Anyone savvy enough about ISPs would know about doing their homework- checking out sites like this. Who in their right mind would want to sign on to a ISP labelled the 'Worst voted ISP'?.
The more inexperience user the easier they are to handle - just feed them s*** because they don't know any better. And when they wise up it'll be time for the next advertising campaign to entice more novices.
@Sara Harpenden: You're right. Thats the only way to treat Orange because you'll never beat them- Just give your money to another ISP that deserves it.
