I've been sending group emails for years containing 25 addresses for a football competiton I run. Suddenly on Tuesday (30 Jan) they were returned to me stating too many recipients. As I didn't have the heart to ring customer services I tried sending group emails with just 5 ddresses which worked. I then went back to my original groups and reduced them to 20 address and this then worked. I now have to send 6 group emails each containing just 20 addresses. Is there an official maximum of addresses that can be in a group (I thought it was 25) and can Orange/Wanadoo take unilateral action like this ? (I think I know the answer to this).
Too much to hope they would infrm their customers !
after a fruitless exchange of messages, I have written the following to the email support staff:
"..you do need to seriously ask yourselves why you have to put up with this kind of stuff when it could be a lot simpler for yourselves (and slighly less frustrating for users) if you were to inform us of your new policy.
Do you audit these changes? Has it improved security?
These are intelligent questions that deserve intelligent answers."
Does anybody have any idea why Orange decided to impose this limit? To reduce spam perhaps? Does anybody think that this action by Orange will help anybody?
Why do they keep doing these things without telling the customers first? Have Orange forgotten why they are there - to serve their customers.

I have made a formal complaint, though I doubt it will make much difference. Spam is sent in thousands or millions even. I cannot see how this change will affect that.

I have just been told by the Wanadoo contact that the address groups have been limited from 50 or 100 (was not toatlly clear), down to 20. They told me this is due to 'ongoing security & technical issues' & would soon be restored. I questioned this as they feel that this is a temporary situation, but i suspect that it is permanent !
could we not only grumble amongst ourselves but also take the trouble to write (yes I know it's an effort and you do require a printer, an envelope and a stamp) and make a formal complaint. Every day I am unable to reply to group messages.

(One response I had from broadband support was that I should buy my own domain name and then I could send as many emails at once as I wanted!)
After spending a day tearing my hair out trying to send group messages as I have done in the past, I went on to the Orange help and support to find that they say 100 messages can be sent!!!! So could not understand why mine kept being rejected........
You guys are a fount of knowledge and I am grateful to you all.
It was only when I read this forum that I realised only 20 can be sent in any group. This took me more hours work to redo my mailings (some 600) into 20 or less groups.
It would be to say the least considerate if Orange advised members of such changes or posted this on their help/support pages.
The corporate line pushed by the support staff is SPAM reduction. So, according to Orange, if you are a member of a group, club, society etc. of more then 20 members you are now a SPAMMER.
But is seems clear that the real reason is to reduce the volume of messages (so they don't have to spend money on servers ?). They are also pushing their "netbenefit" product - i.e. buy your own domain and set up your own mail server. ( Every home should have an IT department!).
It is good business management to increase revenue and reduce costs, but not at the expense of the customer. They have got this badly wrong. I doubt the odd message to "Customer Care" will make much difference as they plainly don't care at all!!
I am making a formal complaint so that I can then complain to the ISPA http://www.ispa.org.uk/. I dont think there are enough people bothered about this, so you are probably right and we'll just have to live with it. sk
