I know I would love free VOIP calls, but with my fixed fee calls on my landline, I'm happy staying as I am. This also means that I am not using a livebox, as it's only possible to configure this if you have a livebox
However I am being upgraded to 6.5MB and I do dread being cut off and being aksed "what are the lights doing on your livebox". Will I be able to just plug it into the master socket, or would it need configuring also to provide them with the correct information? I suppose I don't mind doing this via a spare laptop if I have to use the installation CD

I'm not sure what you are asking. I think you want to keep your non-livebox router and this will work fine. I don't see how things would change just because you are moving to a 6.5Mbps package.
All routers have config pages that will tell you their status, such as whether it is synced, what the connection speed is, up-time, etc.
Whether you choose to use your router or the livebox you just need to enter your logon details and the stats are created by the router itself.

SOrry what I meant was if my line goes dead, I assume they only support the livebox by asking the status of the lights?
Since I've never plugged one in, I'm assuming I'd need to do some configuring in order to get the status they want too see. I assume for a Virgin router getting to the point of seeing username/password required will come after the status of the line check?
In general yes, they'll want you to use the livebox if there's a problem simply because thats what they're trained on. Some will help a little with other routers but it all depends on who you get through to.
Because the livebox is Orange's own then it comes preset for everything except the username and password. Just plugging in the power and cable to the filter in nearest to the power should show you if it can sync with the exchange.
If it's not a sync problem then you may need to do a small amount of configuring. Nothing complicated, possibly a pc setting depending on how it's setup and then access a config page in the livebox to enter the username and password to see what status it shows. A 2 minute job really if you plug it in beforehand. Don't even need to run it's install cd but you could even go through that so all they have to do is check it's status and go through any other required checks for the problem.
You should have the same lights on your router but they may have different icons. On my netgear I have power, line sync, traffic (data transfer) and wireless. It should be easy to explain this to Orange tech support ? As for keeping your router, after 2 hours with tech support (45 mins india and 1 hour + english) I was told by tech support if I did not want the internet phone to stick with my netgear as it was a lot better than the livebox !!....Ahh and my 2 day old livebox is fooked .......deep joy.. What make is your router? If you google the make and model you should be able to get the specs but I would be suprised if it wouldn't hand 6+mg ?
