Hi, I have only recently moved to Orange and received the livebox. I wish I have found this website before choosing Orange, but never mind its done now.
I have called Orange but they inform me that they cannot help. Basically I cannot host games on my pc, ie halo, farcry and americas army. My friends see the server listed but cannot join. I have heard the phrase port forwarding mentioned but I have no idea how to set it up and if this is indeed what i need.
Yeah it's most likely down to port forwarding. The livebox is a router and can have multiple devices connected. When a connection comes in that it didn't initiate and isn't expecting then it doesn't know what system to send that information to. Thats where forwarding comes in. It can get a little technical but don't worry because there's a site that helps with this sort of stuff and once you get the idea if there's something not listed it's easy to work out how to add it once you get the port details from the software maker.
I gave that a try with no success. The problem is I dont have a static IP. The thing is I have never had a static IP and overcame this problem before. Any more ideas. Thanks for the help.
The part in the port forwarding details about the static IP isn't for a static internet IP address. That's about a static local address between the device and livebox, that way if it reconnects on a different address you don't have to change the rules to send the details to the new address.
Portforward has a guide on the whole process of setting the static IP for a PC on practically every program's forwarding page.
You could always try lowering the livebox firewall too incase that is interfering at all.
Remember you may need to add details or alter settings for the programs in your firewall if it's changed or updated since you last hosted a game. Otherwise the portforwarding stuff should be what you need. You may want to check some forums for a couple of games for further insight into setting them up for use behind a router.
