Finally just got my livebox up and running along with wireless laptop. I know very little about this llu business but is it fair to say that its basically Orange sending info down the phone line from exchange rather than BT?
Have heard a lot about speed issues I have just done a test: it reported 183kbs d /load!!!!! Supposed to be 'up to' 8 meg!!! This is with the laptop on too - but less than 15 minutes ago it was just under 5meg. Are these massive variations normal or should I request someone check the line?

There's a couple of signs that help you work out if you're on LLU if you don't fancy calling or emailing Orange. Email would be the easiest and least that way you know for sure.
Anyway in any speedtests have had an upload reading between 288-448kbps? One off, small jumps over, may just be speedtest glitches. If it's reasonably consistantly over then you're not on LLU but IPStream Max.

If so then it's ADSL Max and not LLU, though the site can be busy and sometimes gives errors anyway so try a reasonably quiet time (not evenings) if you can. If you can run the test post the results.

Like you I'm supposed to be on 8meg, but seem to be on a fixed 2meg connection since upgrading last year.
This has worked fine giving 2meg on various speed tests.
That was until last night !!!!
Since then speed is all over the shop getting 63kbs to 157 kbs last night before it returned to 1957 kbs a couple of hours later.
Tonight speed has ranged from 798 to 1902 kbs, going up and down all night.
Are Orange up to something to cause what has been a stable connection since October last year to suddenly start to fluctuate ?

That looks perfectly fine purely from that result.
For the first 10 days after the initial connection the speeds may vary as the line is tested. It should hopefully settle out once that time is up.
