having looked arond the internet for a while I haven't been able to see my problem described so perhaps I'm unique
It seems Orange have changed their default servers and the Default Gateway and DNS server addresses my router now picks up are unreachable - so I cant get onto the internet.
Some sites are OK (google for example) but the majority just time out.
I have tried pinging the DNS servers (193.36.79.101 and 193.36.79.100) and they are completely unreachable, as is the default gateway (91.108.0.1)
So I changed the DNS server addresses back to the old Wanadoo addresses (195.92.195.94 and 195.92.195.95) and the router is happy again - but I still can't get to the internet because the Defaul Gateway is unaccessible.
Does anyone have any idea what I can do to resolve this?
TIA
Mark
BTW, I have called Orange Tech support and the first guy I spoke to didn't know what a default gateway was! The second guy offered me an alternative address (195.92.249.130) which he said might not work - he was right!

Thanks for that I'll give it a try when I get home.
If I read ChrisV's posts correctly all I need to do is set the Router MRU to something higher than 1500 to recover the situation, without messing abour=t with all the PCs, PDAs and game machines.
Ive tried changing MTU to various values both at the router and at the PC, individually and in combination, but still no reliable internet access (though interestingly Orangeproblems.co.uk can be accessed!!)
As Keith said, its not possible to set MTU to greater than 1500.
Any further suggestions gratefully received.
Would anyone like to tell me their Default Gateway address?
Keith
I agree that's what the settings #should# be but by changing to PPPoE & keeping alll the other settings as per your post connectivity is restored.
I'll maybe switch back in a few days to see whether Orange have fixed whatever mess they've installed which originally caused the problem but for now the kids have stopped complaining and I'm a hero at home

I read somewhere else ages ago either on here or avg someone doing that and it worked. Oranges network must be in some kinda mess by the sounds of all these connection problems as already keith said it should be PPPoA.
At least now your working again.

I changed the router settings to use PPPoE and the internet re-appeared!
Who knows why this should be necessary but it works.
Hope this helps someone else

Where do I go to change these settings? I really am a novice. I have sorted most of my problems by running Tweakmaster, but still cannot acccess any secure sites. any assistance here gratefullyreceived.
Thanks,
Fiona
This problem started happening ot me on Thursday 19th. Just out of curiosity I changed settings as suggested here (swapping from PPOA to PPOE initially, then when this stopped working changed MTU settings), and the problem went away..... For about half an hour, as I was then disconnected (ie my router reporting no dial tone), no amount of router restarting rectifying the issue.
Add in that when I was a Wanadoo customer I was upgraded to 8MB, and that without a, "by your leave" they have slapped me onto LLU reducing me to 2MB, but my monthly cost remains as it did when I received the 8MB service. The tone of the email I received a couple of moths ago from the support department when I queried this was that if I didn't like it, I had to sign a new contract..... but that LLU was none negotiable. Cheeky ********.
In short I'm receiving no service when I use my router, have to use the poxy speedtouch modem that I was provided with by wanadoo, or put up with only being able to access Google and this site. For the privilege of this they have the cheek to charge me more than Orange customers who can use the Orange provided "brain damaged" Live box router, and no damn service unless I forget about wireless access for my wifes laptop (studying at uni).
I understand that Freeserve used to be less than perfect, especially since I worked for Mitsubishi tech support, and had to support Apricot sold through PC World/Dixons/Curries via Mastercare.... But the last Three moths is the worse I have seen in the last ten years.

Hi,
I had a similar problem "Google" (+ one or two others only)" after I bought my Linksys router and set it up.
I fixed the problem by downloading and installing the latest firmware onto it. Now my connecteion is fine (using PPoA) - it's just that sending e-mails with Orange is pot luck, it can work, or stop working for days!
If you use an Ethernet modem / router, the correct connection settings are:
encapsulation: PPP over ATM (PPoA)
multiplexing method: VC-Based
virtual circuit: VPI=0 VCI=38
modulation: Multi mode
authentication: CHAP
I use defaults for all else (except of course the security settings - it's amazing how many of my neighbours have unsecured wireless networks - they are asking for trouble!).
Regards
Neil

The settings that you have quoted are the same settings that I've used since signing up in the tail end of the freeserve days (I still have an fsnet email address), the thing is, I managed to get everything up again on Thursday for about ten minutes by switching to PPOE, at which point the service became unavailable. Tried again on Friday and it's up again (on PPOE, PPOA remains unusable), but my speed has dropped still further. What had been an 8MB service with Wanadoo, and a 2MB LLU service with Orange has now become a sub 1.8MB service.
Not to put too fine a point on it, I find this unacceptable. The tone of the email sent from Orange tech/account support in reply to a request for clarification is very much, "If you want to receive equal treatment to everyone else, sign a new 12 month contract or go away.".
Their attitude and the trained macaques they appear to employ for tech support have ensured that I will be moving my account elsewhere pronto.....
