this is my mums dial up so cant check easily for any responses..
That error message is a bit misleading, simply means it can't find and/or connect to the broadband signal on the line.
It's standard procedure to try and rule out all possibilites at your end first, that means trying it in the master socket. You could try just moving the PC tower and modem to the socket and see what it does when powered up. You won't be able to check any errors etc but you should be able to see what the light does. While there I'd recommend trying a different filter and having everything else unplugged from the line when you test.
If it goes solid there and flashes back in it's normal position then it means it's likely the wiring is the trouble and you may have just saved yourself a hefty bill. If BT had sent someone out to find that out they'd charge you and it's recently gone up a lot. (link explains a bit more)
If it still flashes then you'll need to call Orange and ask they do a line test.
