I have been with Freeserve/Wanadoo for years without any problems. After Orange took over I checked out the latest deals & decided to go from 1mbit capped at 6gb to 2mbit, unlimited. The sign on checked this out & accepted my line was capable of upgrading. Since it changed I have went no faster than 48 kbits / per sec. I only recently heard of the Samknows site. There I found my exchange does not support my new upgrade. See below:
ADSL is available in your area
Your exchange is also enabled for ADSL Max services
According to BT Wholesale, your line should be able to support a 1.5Mbps or greater ADSL connection via ADSL Max.
Standard ADSL RAG results:
You cannot receive 2Mbps ADSL
You may be able to receive 1Mbps ADSL
You can receive 512Kbps ADSL
You can receive 256Kbps ADSL
There appears to a compatibility issue with your phone line. This could be caused by an existing DSL connection, ISDN, a DACS unit, TPON, a pending ADSL order or many other common issues. This will need to be resolved before ADSL can be supplied to your line.
If not I'm back to were I started as I have to wait up to ten days for the change to take place. The lies told by Orange have been inexcusable. Losing my original connection has been a real pain. It was lightning in comparison to what I'm eduring now.
Firstly you're not in an LLU area? (I presume no from your post though)
Now onto the the bigger part, when did you upgrade and exactly what was it to? Was there any mention of ADSL Max or the 10 day stabilisation period previously?
If you weren't put straight onto ADSL Max (depends when you upgraded) then you'd be on fixed 2 meg. That shouldn't run slow if the line cannot support it, you'd usually get either no connection or a very intermittant connection. As it's simply 2 meg or nothing, there's no inbetween.
From the Max figure of 1.5meg it sounds like you're probably on the lower limits of being able to get 1meg.
Just remember though, speeds the line can support can and do change. It's possible if you didn't see the available speeds previously that 2meg was thought possible but lowered after you experienced the problem.
Thanks for your reply. I am however not as clever as you will all the technical side of things. My LLU info is below as shown on the Samknows site:
LLU xDSL presence at your exchange
You are connected to the Livingston Station telephone exchange.
The following table details the availability of LLU services at your location.

I upgraded on the 8/11 & got changed over on the 15/11 (this is when the connection became very sluggish). I have for 3 minutes in this time got a speed test of 1.7mbit!! All other times even to now is laborious.
There was no mention of the connection type & I never knew to ask. I presumed that the people @ Orange are aware of my line's capabilities.
Overall Orange customer services have been very unhelpfull. I have been stuck in the 'use options 5,1,!! ping pong game for hours' due to operators giving out wrong information. Because I do not have a Livebox or a Speedtouch modem they cannot check my speed. Before changing over I asked was my equipment ok for the change & yes was the reply.
The stabilisation period was mentioned when I called back to lower the speed. I spent years with Wanadoo on a 1mbit connection that very occasionaly dropped the line (more recently than any other time) but overall was reliable. I have no idea where they re-routed my connection but it is much slower than my 56k connection 15 years ago!! I do use a Netgear wireless router (DG834GT) & not any of the Orange shipped hardware. Surely this would not make a difference or would it? From the information I have supplied is it likely my line will return to a reasonable speed again when the 1.5mbit connection takes place.
I just feel I was mis-sold their contract & after trying to get released from it they demanded one years subscription for cancelation. They are a law unto themselves. I have to pay for there mistakes.

Thats the main bit to know, means no LLU stuff to deal with making things a little bit easier.

This likely means you were upgraded onto the ADSL Max system as it was pretty recent.

I'll come to this topic in a bit as it's linked closely to the ADSL Max stuff.

Ok the nitty gritty. Your router should be fine for ADSL Max, the problem you've found is Orange aren't trained in that router and don't know how to check what they need to with it. A new or different router could make a difference as there can always be hardware faults with any piece of equipment.
Next the line speed, there is no set speed usually on ADSL Max. What happens is the modem establishes the fastest connection to the exchange it can. The exchange then monitors the amount of data able to be sent and trys to keep the data profile to a level where the connection is stable. A lot of that is monitored and set within the first 10 days, even as the check showed that your line should be able to do 1.5 meg Max doesn't limit it if it can throw faster speeds down there.
Unless the mention of 1.5 meg was due to a fault being found and causing BT to put a cap on the speed to stabilise the connection then ignore it as it's meaningless in this situation. There's no 1.5meg non-Max speed so it has to be Max with a limit after a fault or they were talking rubbish.
One of the main things about Max is it's very sensitive to even minor problems that didn't cause any issues before. It's the same for any speed upgrade but the higher the speed the worse the effect, sounds like for your line you won't be able to go much higher for the forseeable future until ADSL2+ or some form of fibre system.
First thing I'd do is take as much out of the equation as possible, unplug everything from your phone line, if you have one of the good master sockets you can unscrew two screws and move the lower part of the faceplate to be able to try from the test socket. If you can try the router with filter into that socket by itself. If you can find out from the router's pages paste in the attenuations, margins, sync and speeds it should show on there. Also it may be worth trying the BT speedtest system, http://speedtester.BT.com if I remember right, as that would then help show the sync speed and profile you're connected on.
Just to update this topic. It was discovered that my exchange cannot supply me with anything more than a 1 mbit connection. Orange put me to a 2 mbit connection. Despite numerous calls & one yesterday to there head office I am still on the non stable 2 mbit connection. They are the most useless bunch of individuals I have ever come across. I cannot believe that a simple request to put me onto an operational 1 mbit connection has so far eluded there technical know-how.
It would seem that the merry go round is very hard to get back off when you get on it. I recommend that if your Orange connection works do not upgrade!!! You have been warned.
When I visited 'my account' online there is no option to reduce speed, only to increase. They even say I can go faster. 2.5 mbit!!!!!!!!!!

Downgrades are supposed to be done if a fault finds the speed to be the cause of the problem. I presume from the option to go faster that you've been put onto 2meg IPStream and not Max.
I eventually called Orange Head Office (number from this forum) & after a 4 minute call & a 4 day wait I am now up & running again. I must admit the head office operators were very helpful & very polite & understanding.
A big thank you to Mark & Nicky! If only the Broadband support were are fast at problem solving then this forum may not exist. I am however grateful it does. A big thank you to all who contributed to my resolving my woes.
I was upgraded to 2MB in october - which coincides with all my problems, no wonder look

You are connected to the Marshalls Cross telephone exchange.
ADSL is available in your area
Your exchange is also enabled for ADSL Max services
According to BT Wholesale, your line should be able to support a 2Mbps or greater ADSL connection via ADSL Max.
Standard ADSL RAG results:

[BT ADSL Code: AEGEGEL] You can receive 256Kbps ADSL
You are approximately 1.98km from the exchange (straight line distance).
However, your line is currently unbundled by an LLU operator such as Be, Bulldog or Easynet (SMPF LLU). Moving to another provider may require a cease and re-provide, which may result in loss of service for up to two weeks.

Please what is the magic head office no. as i am suffering this problem my neighbours either side( by1/2mile are on 1mg no problem as i was until i asked for price reduction from wanadoo £17.99 (what a wonderful service )to Orange £14.99 rubbish i never asked for speed upgrade now no connection after 4pm.
I do not know what the figures mean though. Please can someone tell me? Are these speeds good or bad?
The upload is a little low, download is ok but it all depends on exactly what service your on. It's either LLU or ADSL Max, I'd lean more towards LLU but just from those figures it's hard to be certain.
The line stats from your modem/router would help to estimate what your line can support and tell what connection type it is.
