I've been a happy Orange mobile customer since 1997, and got my free BB q3 last year.
Once I got my 'livebox' and everything was set up, it worked fine.
Over the last few months, I've noticed that my computer randomly loses it's connection to the internet. There is no pattern, doesn't matter what time of day or length of use. It can last 5 mins or more but it has usually gone within an hour.
I have reached a point where I am running out of ideas and I could really use some help with this.
What happens is I'll be using the internet and without warning, after clicking a link or something it will just lose its connection and say something like 'times out'.
At this point the livebox lights are normal, with the @ light steady. At this point I can usually restore the connection by either:
disabling / re-enabling my network connection from the control panel
re-booting my pc
re-booting the livebox
or sometimes
using the 'repair' facility on my network connection which makes it renew the IP address.
So far I have tried the following without success:
different PC
different livebox (g/f has Orange BB too, hers is fine)
new network card (after advice from Orange)
different login details (g/fs)
turning zone alarm off (XP firewall always off)
turning AVG anti virus off
My PC spec is basically WinXP SP2 fully updated
AMD XP2000+ processor, 1gb ram
Fully checked for viruses / malware via AVG, spybot, adaware
Livebox fully up to date
I have one BT point in my house, in my office upstairs. I use cordless DECT phones with the master at the BT point and 2 slaves around the house. I have the supplied speed touch filter between the BT box and the livebox / phone.
When the connection is lost, I cannot ping either my default gateway or DNS server. It times out. Once the connection is restored pinging is fine with no visible packet loss.
I am running out of ideas, if anyone can offer some advice it would be very much appreciated as Orange don't even know whats wrong!
Well if you've tried 2 computers on that livebox and they were the same along with your girlfriend's livebox which was ok then that points to a problem with the box itself.
If you have an Orange cd try running through the recovery and seeing if that helps at all.
Elhana,
thanks for this.
I should have been a little clearer in my post: When my g/f and I swapped liveboxes, she had no problems at all using my livebox, whereas I still had the problem with her live box. I guess this rules out the livebox itself.?
Thanks.

From all that you have tested I would suggest the problem is:
1. Filter problem - defective filter or filter in wrong position
2. BT Line problem or internal telephone wiring problem in the house
3. Orange equipment problem at exchange
Thanks for this Keith.
I will try the following and post results:
1-double check my filter is in the correct place (I am sure it is)
2-if above is true try the spare filter that I have
3-try the test socket thing on the BT socket
4-ask the neighbours if they have any problems (if they have broadband, a lot are pensioners)
5-Give my PC a good kick
One thing I will say, I seem to recall a while ago when I was trying different things, I ran a command on the dos prompt which pingd the gateway repeatedly over and over again. I seem to recall the connection holding whilst this was happening, for hours. Maybe I got this wrong. Damn my memory! I'll look into this again, see if I can remember the command.

Ping 192.168.1.1 -t
Control C to stop
I've just tried that and it pings repeatedly until you stop it. But I am not sure what that means.

Just answering Kyesers query.
For info purposes this command does a continuous loopback ping to the router. Without the -t it only does it 4 times. Its a means of quickly checking connectivity between PC and router. Apologies if I'm telling you something you already know but did not quite understand your last reply.
Thanks for this guys
I'll give it a crack tonight and post the results.
Gonna get in the loft and get my spare speedtouch filter also, see if this helps.
Failing this, its test socket, then failing that it will be BT's / Orange's problem.
I hope it doesn't have to go down that road!
Thanks.
Hi guys,
well tonight I have checked that the speed touch filter was correctly fitted and it was. I then tried my spare filter in case the original was faulty. Still drops.
Finally I tried the repeated pinging and still it dropped the connection.
So, next I will try asking the neighbours and on Saturday my mate is going to let me try his USB modem to see if it is liveboxes in general that my PC does not like.
Failing this its ask the neighbours if they have any problems, and try the test socket.
I'll keep you posted.
Thanks
Hello folks,
Well at the weekend I tried my mates USB modem and low and behold it worked a treat, stayed connected for ages even when left idle.
So, I called Orange to see if the live box could be exchanged for a USB modem. The chap I spoke to was very friendly and said that wouldn't be a problem but he'd like me to try one more thing before hand: when the connection dropped he wanted me to plug the network cable into the other port on the live box....
Well, I have to admit this is something that I had never tried. It had always been in the red port as per the instructions I was given when I got it.
I tried swapping to the yellow port and it seems to be cured.
Again, last night I left it on for a couple of hours and the connection remained.
I can't believe the answer was that simple!
So, finges crossed thats problem solved.
Thanks everyone for your help!

I have had exactly the same problems as you, with the disconnections happening every hour or so. In the mornings the time duration between disconnections seems to be less than in the evenings and late at night.
