hi im a bit of a novice with computers so please bear with me!
is it possible to print wirelessly using the livebox and if so what and how is it done? do i need a special type of printer? i have an epson d78 connected to a desktop and i would really like to print via my laptop.

It should work regardless of what Router / Hub / Switch (the livebox acts as a Router). you are using, the print server (usually contained within the printer itself) connects to the network and will be detected as a node just like a computer on the LAN would.

Thats true for real network printers that have a LAN connection. Most people have USB printers that require a host device, either a pc or if you follow that thread the livebox itself can host the printer.
