I'd been on 512kb Wanadoo broadband for some time, and never had any problems with it. I upgraded to 2mb, yes it was capped but, I went for it. Again, no problems.
On 15th Nov 2005 I got an email - we're upgrading you, great I thought 8mb. The upgrade would be sometime between 8am and 6pm, on the 21st, and would be down for about 30mins, and I'd get a email confirming my actual upgraded speed, be it the full 8mb or something less. The upgrade never happened.
I can't remember when it happened, but about 2 months ago - 3 months after I was told it would be done - I found that I was connecting at 8mb - great I thought, better late than never... although I never got an email confirming it.
All the tests I have run (yes the result do vary), suggest I'm getting 2.5mb at best, even though I'm connected at 8mb.
So, first of all, I'm not getting 8mb or anything like. I don't know anyone else with 8mb so I can't compare and see what it should be like.
And the second problem? Disconnections. Always disconnections - so much for "Always On". It's totally random when it happens, although evenings are worse, but morning, afternoon and even the very small hours, it's always disconnecting. It's about as reliable as a very unreliable thing.
I have to wait for several retrys before it connects again (keep getting no dial tone). Sometimes I have to reboot.
While typing this, I've had to reconnect twice!
I'm an IT professional. I know what I'm doing. I run XPsp2, fully patched, with firewall and AV. And I have the latest drivers for my Alcatel USB (which included something specifically for running at 8mb) but nothing has helped.
I keep thinking about calling wanadoo, but... I don't want to go through the same hours of calls other seem to have done. And as I said, I'm an IT professional and don't want to be talked to by a dumb helpdesk monkey who has no idea about... well anything.

Hi JonnyTurbo
Thank you for your comments...
I have repeatedly asked for my connection to be swapped back to the 2Mb connection speed (which I was very happy with) but unfortunately for me, Wanadoo refuses to put people back to the 2Mb speeds. I was told by a "team leader" that he would try and get me back to 2Mb and he would return my call... Alas, he never called back - just tried to fob me off and get me off the phone no doubt!
I am now in touch with Wanadoo, although I shall not hear form them until Monday now. I shall keep all on this forum updated with as much infromation that I can drag out of them....
Well, according to www.samknows.com I'm 1.8km from the Exchange, and knowing where it is, I suspect the actual route wont be much different from the straight line route.
So short of moving next door to the exchange, there's not really much hope!
But I'm not convinced it's a distance issue (yet). I can be connected for hours with no problem. Always at 7.6mbps, but as I mentioned above, speeds checks suggest I'm not getting that speed.
I've just been trying the speed tests... Today I seem to be averaging about 4mb - a new world record!
I would also like to point something out... Wanadoo got done by the ASA for adverts saying get "8mb BB Now", when of course it's very limited availability - hey, it doesn't work properly where it is available!
When i had my line speed dropped from 8mb to 6mb it was because even tho i had an 8mb connection (the test was done about 10.30am) my thru-put was about 3.5mb. So the engineer lowered my cap to 6mb and the thru-put increased to 5.5mb. Had download speeds of about 620kps.
The problem is, you need to get an engineer who's at your exchange (or who can at least can log into your exchange) to check it out.
From what i've read so far, that won't be an easy task.

Please note that 7.6Mbps is your DSL data rate. That means maximum IP payload of around 7Mbps (is variable depending on packet size).
However, all residential services are sold as "up to" a certain data rate. Wanadoo contend your traffic at backhaul and possibly elsewhere in the network and may rate limit you at their BRAS or with a P-Cube or similar depending on your traffic type.
With most good service providers you should get line rate at least some of the time.
The problem is not with your SNR etc. If the line is up and stable and not showing rapidly counting LOS, LOF etc errors then there is nothing wrong with the line.
