Sounds like it's been put onto ADSL Max and you're actually connected to the special secret exchange used by the shadow world government!
Somewhere on the netgear config it should tell you the attenuation, noise margin and connected speed. I'd expect the attenuation to be pretty low meaning the line isn't as long as you think.

If this indicates the line isn't that long (?), shouldn't I be on 8mb?! Or at last more than 1mb...
(BTW - it said I was connected at 1024/448 before the speed increased as well)

Ok looks like I mixed up my figures. Really annoying using kilobits and kilobytes for connection speeds, I should of thought about it more carefully and I would have noticed properly!
Anyway from the stats...
Yes you do have a long line, currently on ADSL Max. When you took those stats you would have been on a 0.5 meg profile as the sync speed is just below the 1152 needed for 1 meg. Looks like you'll probably be stuck on 0.5 meg with the occasional 1 meg reconnection. You'll probably still be in the 10 day training period so it's possible it could change but I'd say unlikely.
There's also the chance if you check your wiring and sockets etc, then you may be able to push the line to be a steady 1 meg.
