I'm already using wanadoo broadband. I moaned at Orange for charging me more for 1 mbps than they were quoting for full speed. I got a reduction and the speed - good.
I also got a livebox thingy. It doesn't want to work at all - wow, see the threads about that!!
Anyway my question is - I was told by the sales rep that I could connect my existing router to the livebox so as to get more than 2 hard wired pcs on my network. I don't see why I should go and buy a load of wireless cards to link 4 PCs that are in the same room?!.
I'm happy enough using my existing router, but fancy trying their "free" calls.
I assume I need the livebox for this? I'll start a separate thread for this as I can't find the answer to that on the forum either.
Peace & Love
Yeah you can connect another router into the livebox but it can be a bit hit and miss depending on the router itself.
If it has trouble then there's 2 main things to do, set the router to be 192.168.1.2 and turn off it's DHCP server. That way the livebox does all the addressing and stuff for all the pc's.
great. thanks for that; i was a bit sceptical.
What wiring route should i use? Aren't the ethernet sockets out only? or should i use the usb B connections or the 1, 2 usb A connections on the livebox?
I'd want the livebox second in line as I don't really trust it.
I suppose I have to get the livebox to workfirst LOL. The CD rom won't even load. What an organisation!
Thanks again oh brainy one

If they were out only how could you upload to the internet?

You'll probably not be able to get a usb connection to work between routers at all as it would need extra drivers.

I'm not certain if the talk service will work that way around. Being first all it has to do is provide addresses for connecting devices and route traffic to the 2nd router, it's a basic function which is should be able to do without any trouble.

You shouldn't really need it. How to get around the CD not running...
Connect a PC to the livebox through ethernet,
Use Internet Explorer to open "192.168.1.1",
Click the link and enter "admin" as both username and password,
Click Services and then Internet,
Enter your Orange username and password into the boxes,
Submit and prodiving the cable to the filter is in the socket nearest to the power and the line is active it should connect up with a solid @ light to confirm it.
Aha.
well i tried your advice. first i had 5 attempts at resetting the liebox, which eventually did reset properly
I had to try 3 pcs before i found one that actually recognised the liebox by IP address. (they all found the existing router 1st go, of course)
I logged on to the liebox as per instructions and wow! an internet connection. And the telephone has a fuzzy noise on the line, but, alas, no signal to make calls with.
Well, the PC connected to the liebox got the internet, however I have 4 computers on the system (wires) so, as the sales rep said I could I tried connecting my proper router to the yellow socket on the liebox - ho hum, no signal. So I tried putting the proper router first (ie connecting the phone line to the proper router). Hooray, i have internet on 3 pcs, including one which is connected via the yellow socket of the liebox.
(phone to proper router. Proper router to 3 PCs. Proper router to red socket of liebox. Liebox yellow socket to another PC. Phone connected to liebox -has hissy noise)
So, you say, hooorraay at last.
Well, no, actually AS IVE NOW LOST THE INTERNET CONNECTION TO THE PC I USED TO CONNECT UP THE LIEBOX in the 1st place.
It won't connect to the internet at all nor will it network to any of the other PCs AT ALL!!!
it won't find the proper router ip address either
I've tried just connecting it through the liebox with nothing else = Zilch
I've tried connecting it to the proper router, both on its own and with all the other PCs attached = Zilch
I've tried system restore = Zilch
I've tried setting up a new network using the wizard = zilch
I've checked the lead by carrying another PC to the room and, of course, getting the internet and network trouble free.
So i've put the liebox back in the packet. I'm arguing with Orange about cancelling the contract and getting my MAC code (which is what I asked for in the 1st place) but they want £59 quid off me FOR SOMETING THAT DOESNT WORK PROPERLY. If it was a washing machine it'd go straight back to the shop. What gives them the right to sell things to people that they don't want and that doesn't work??
Sorry, rant over.
Have you any ideas of how to get the internet back without reloading windows? Hope it's a simple fix?
Be advised, do not connect anything from Orange to you computer equipment
ta from the underwhelmed
my son's in bed now, so i can't access his pc til 2moro.
it was on dchp - before the liebox it just found the network without prompting and was quite happy for the past year that way.
Have i got to give it it's own ip address. I assume i just take one similar to the proper router such as 10.0.0.5etc.
there is a dchp client on the router. should i enable that or am i heading for a mauling there?
what i can't see, is why should logging on the the liebox crash the settings in the way that a proper router doesn't?
I can't really spend my life trying to get this thing to work.
I've got to try ringing the 2 dozen 0800 numbers from saynoto0870 so i can moan at wannapriceyorange whilst they're paying for the call.
thanks again for your advice.
Well, I feel better for the rant!!
Anyhow, i looked up the IP address that my proper router had assigned to the non-seeing PC. (Sadly, I write this sort of thing down)
And I manually assigned this and, as you knew it would, I'm back on line.
THANX
I've also got my telephone number. It works if the liebox is connected to the BT line - however the internet connection isn't always working AND the liebox still won't see the proper router. In fact the LB seems to have given up the internet altogether.
We use at least 3 PCs at once most evenings and I don't want to go wireless (it don't look simple and I'd have to buy the kit - this is supposed to be a cost cutting exercise!)
So does anyone have a fix to use the liebox just for the phone line whilst using another router for primary access ie having the liebox as a 2nd router for phone only. Buying a skype isn't cost cutting.
OR
how can I make my proper router get a signal from the liebox?
I've tried using both the yellow and the red sockets, pressing the (1) button powering down both boxes and variations on the above.
All this and less

I have now had the benefit of 2 hrs of the techies time - and they rang me!!
An actual instance of Orange doing what they said they would - cherish it!
Lie box will work with 2 of my 4 computers. My main one for some reason won't even see the LB. The talk will work.
That's my fault, apparently, even though the main PC works fine on a proper router. Tough, I'm afraid, no call for restitiution as the LB does work.
However, more on the tandem router issue. The LB has to be first in the chain if one wants the talk function. The LB will work after the proper router, but only as a broadband bunny, not with the talk function.
Apparently I have the wrong sort of router! I don't have an input socket other than the phone line. This explains (as i thought initially) why I can't join them together.
This goes to the nub of the problem. In my initial sales pitch I stressed that I had to have 4 computers hard wired up together with the talk. This is not possible; they did not mention specific requirements for additional routers{but really should have done} so I am stuffed in terms of parting company with wannafreeserforange until my time is up (9th Aug).
or am I. next call to be from the next level of complaints dept. Just how many levels are there?
watch this space.
Hope you all got the technical facts out from between the ranting?
Very Victor Meldrew!
