I have just moved from a country village to a Big Town with a better equiped exchange and everything and i was getting full 8 Meg in the village and ive moved, and Orange first said i could only get 512 K,!!!!!!!!! but its been turned on and im getting about 1600 K, so nearly 2 Meg, which i can live with.
I understand that i am a fair distance from the exchange, but i live on a new estate so theoretically all the cabling is brand new,
My ADSL Stats on my livebox are below:
ADSL firmware version : A2pBT009c1.d17d
Connection mode : G.DMT
Type : Fast
Noise margin (dB) : 6.5
Attenuation (dB) : 60.0
Attainable download rate (kbps) : 1664
ADSL status : Connected [0]
Downstream Upstream
Rate (kbps) 1632 448
It seems like my Attenuation is very high?, will i have bad reliablity on those figures?
I just want to say in Oranges Defence that the broadband was moved & On in 3 Days!!!!!!!!, im in I.T and ive never known ADSL to be switched on so quick!
Hi,
Your attenuation value indicates a cable length of around 4.5km. You can find the location of your exchange on www.samknows.com, armed with that information you can work out an estimated distance from the exchange. If these values differ greatly then I would get a line check performed (it may be worth asking for one anyhow!)
Your upload speed indicates your connected to Orange via a BT ADSL Max connection, which is good news! A rough guide to your maximum connection speed at that distance would 2.5 meg However, the higher the attenuation the greater the chances of signal loss. Your currently connected using FastPath which is a good sign! If they were seeing lots of errors you would be switched over to Interleave. I suspect you will get few if any drop outs, however it's hard to tell as each and every line performs differently...
Has the connection been live for more then 10 days? The reason I ask is that the final speed is not determined untill the end of this period, so you could still see an increase in performance! It's also worth checking the internal wiring... A poorly installed extention can have a very bad effect on ADSL, as can the lack of an ADSL filter on a phone!
Yeah looks as although the cabling may be new the line takes a long route to the exchange, thats why it's got the high attenuation. You're on ADSL Max so it will go as fast as it can on your line. It's possible that it may speed up slightly after the first 10 days but with those stats I wouldn't hold much hope.
As long as the noise margin stays over 6 then it should be stable.
Seen faster activations than that but not by much and they're pretty rare.

Thanks very much for your very interesting post, it all confused me before! ive found out that i am about 1.4 Kilometres from the exchange?!
And i was on ADSL Max for 8 Meg before, so as you say its a good sign i am still on that,
It has only been on for 2 days, so as you say it still needs to be stabilised,
Can you explain what Fast Path and Interleave are?
Also the lines in the house are all brand new, and its a new house, and there are only 2 sockets being used, 1 being the livebox only, and the other being the Main Cordless phone and the Sky Box, so 2 lines in use, 2 filters.

About the Margin above 6, that was my understanding that if its about 6 then it is not considered a problem for the provider, until it drops below 5.
As i was quoted a 512K speed connection, im quite happy with anything better than that! and as its syncing at nearly 2 meg i wouldnt have thought it would drop below a meg.
ok seems to me that 3 days is far too quick, i sugguest you contact Orange and speak to the provisioning team to confirm this with them OR contact BT tags online and ask them to confirm whether its Orange or not
reason im saying this is because the broadband could be the previous tenants of the property and therefore could be another isp

Well its a brand new property, so previous people are impossible!, and when we moved in there was no ADSL Sync until i contacted Orange to move us.
Interleaveing is a technique to make connections more stable. Does have the effect of increasing latency slightly and reducing speed. The system automatically puts it on if it thinks it'll help.
From those stats you could have a 2 meg connection but I expect if interleave is on you're getting 1.5 meg or less IP profile.
