Is the approx distance from London calculated from a combination of the line speed and latency? Mine's ~ 200 miles and according to multimap it's spot on

I always thought they worked by referring to the approximate geolocation the IP is registered to.

I thought the same too, but other users reporting C&W as their ISP with a range of approx 50 miles versus my 200

It must be an impressive database if speedtest can determine area by IP address

I'm more impressed by IP geolocation now I've looked at:
