Another new member here. Ive been watching this website for some time now and have just thought i would test my speed as the bubble that appears when i connect always shows a relatively good speed, normally above 5 Meg (I'm on the 8 meg llu) but website pages seem to take ages to load.
I used thinkbroadband and this is the result:
My "bubble" shows i am connected at 5.9 Meg however thinkbroadband shows 3.7 meg!!!
I know that this is better than a lot of you guys are getting, but i still get disconnected frequently and then the computer tries to reconnect and i get an error message telling me there is no dial tone!!! I have to wait about 10-15 seconds and then i can connect again. This is MUCH WORSE after about 6pm i.e. when i come home from work and really want to use the internet.
Is Orange sending misleading information to my computer so that my "bubble" that appears and tells me i am connected at a particular speed when in fact, i am not at this speed at all - i am at a much slower speed but obviously it is not in Orange's interest to tell me this?
I hope to receive some comments on this - and for those that get much less of a speed than i do, i sympathise whole-heartedly. I know i get better than some of you but at the same time, it appears that we are all being misled perhaps. And I suffer the constant interruptions of having to redial 4 or 5 times a night.
By the way - i use the speedtouch modem and not the livebox and i am in Dulwich, south east London.
And............ As I posted this message I was disconnected!!!!!!!
I was able to go back screen and copy the text thank goodness else I would have probably given up. What's going on?????
The speed usually goes up in half meg jumps and it gives a bit of space so you don't max out the connection and then get disconnected if it varys down a fraction. The above 5 meg speeds effectively becomes probably 4.5meg - 5meg. The speedtouch can be a bit tempremental over 4 meg. Some have no trouble, others need the updated drivers to help with the speed.
Thank you Elhana for your repsonse. Should I update my drivers as per the instructions in other posts here? I am afraid to update the driver in case I end up with 0 Meg!
Attilia, I did say that I am aware that i get a relatively good speed compared to others, but i am still getting constant disconnections which is probably worse than having a stable 1 or 2 Meg connection. And I too am paying for this! I shall wait for Elhana's response before deciding what to do!!!!!!!!! Not that I will blame Elhana if it all goes pear-shaped!!!!!!
Once installed, there should be a new system tray icon appear. Right click on the icon and choose Advanced then Write log file to disk. It will ask you where to save the file - choose your desktop for convenience.
Once the window disappears, double click on the file called drst.xml on your desktop to view your line stats.
Well the drivers shouldn't really do much for disconnections as they're purely to help the connection between the pc and modem. May help to see your line stats for the disconnection problem, can't remember how exactly you get them with a speedtouch though, someone posted a link on here which explained the process.
The drivers should be pretty safe to install, if something goes wrong you can just uninstall them and reinstall the original or try a system restore back to before you installed them.
Thought I would do a quick update as I also posted my query elsewhere (sorry!!!!!)
I had a recommendation to use another speed checker - http://www.speedtest.bbmax.co.uk/ and the results were even worse - actually, I have logged off and logged back on since the last speed check, so i did the thinkbroadband speed test again as well. Here are the miserable results:
And no doubt I will get cut off countless times this evening as well...
Elhana - thank you I will search for how to get my line stats and post back - and will also probably go for the updated drivers - surely it can't get worse
I have never really checked this before. i thought it was the websites just taking time to load. Obviously not
Thought i would post this here so others could see if they have problems. Bit late to start doing this tonight, but will do tomorrow and will post back and let you know what happens.
Ok, it confirms you're on LLU, reasonable close to the exchange as attenuation isn't too high. Margin is 6 so it's not likely to go much higher sync wise unless the setup or wiring is causing problems. From the looks of the sync rate you ought to be on a 5meg or 5.5meg speed connection. Your end appears to be fine, it looks to be mainly a bottleneck at some point preventing the speed going higher.
