I am signed up for the 8Mb package, my speed is usually 1.1mb and i assume this is because of my distance from the exchange, is this probably why?
Anyway, recently the speed has dropped to 600kbps, which is a joke if you ask me, seeing as i am paying for 8mb.
I have given up contacting Customer Services for now and i was hoping you guys could give me something to try that may help?
Here is a screenshot of the ADSL information from my Livebox:
Looks like you're on an LLU connection from the stats. It's showing it should be able to get 1 meg, 2 possibly at a stretch. Your attenuation is pretty high meaning something's bad with the wiring, line or you're just pretty far away from the exchange.
Apart from getting Orange to do line checks there's not much you can do as it appears you're stuck at 1/2 meg speeds like a few other people on here.
TOMG, sorry to hijack your topic, but it seems I've got the same, but even worse problem.
We're also signed up for the 8mb service, but haven't been getting it at any point in time. From what I've been told is that our phone line is at the end of the Merton Park exchange (we're in Morden)- is this prolly why we're getting these awful stats? Is there anything that can be done? Or would our best move be to literally move to the new Virgin Media cable which is available in our area?
And also: "You are approximately 2.57km from the exchange (straight line distance)"
I did a test that said "You are approximately 3.86km from the exchange (straight line distance)."
Is that considered far?
Thats pretty far, tallies with your attenuation as the line itself is likely to be longer than that distance.

Well you're noise margin isn't too bad, again attenuation is pretty high.
In both these cases the connection is somehow being limited as it's set to the 608/288 speeds where the stats show ideally it should be 1 meg and possibly 2 meg if it's stable enough. As far as I know there's no simple, easy or direct fix for this. It has to be tested to find the cause but that may just come back as everything's fine.
you are not alone with spped of 608. My stats say attainable download speed of 9120 but like you Orange have decided to keep me at 608.
It must be their euipment not ours at fault.
ADSL firmware version : A2pBT009c1.d17d
Connection mode : G.DMT
Type : Fast
Noise margin (dB) : 30.3
Attenuation (dB) : 34.0
Attainable download rate (kbps) : 9120
ADSL status : Connected [0]
Is there ever any chance of it going back up? I know my line is physically capable of at least 1.1 because its done so before, so they are breaking their own T&C by capping me at 608, the ad should read "speeds up to 0.6mb".
so they are breaking their own T&C by capping me at 608, the ad should read "speeds up to 0.6mb".
Don't think they are, it just seems that way. Same as someone on Wireless & Talk. Supposed to be upto 8 meg but there are still many customers who are complaining that they are still on fixed 2 meg or less. Oranges stock answer 'this is the maximum speed your line can handle'
However, one area where I believe they are breaking the T & C's is where a customer who was on ADSLMax and is then changed to LLU at Oranges convenience and then finds the download speeds are significantly less or capped. If you regard this as a significant change which is detrimental to you then according to the T & C's you have the right to cancel:
18. general - changes to the services or terms of use
18.1 We may alter or amend at any time:
18.1.1 any aspect of the Services upon giving you one month's notice in advance, of such alteration taking effect, provided such alteration or amendment does not require any material change to the Broadband Starter Agreement, Broadband Unlimited Agreement or the Member Agreement; and
18.1.2 the terms of the Broadband Starter Agreement, Broadband Unlimited Agreement or the Member Agreement upon giving you one month's notice in advance of any such amendment taking effect. If the proposed amendment is to your detriment and you do not wish to continue with the Services, you may terminate the Broadband Starter Agreement, Broadband Unlimited Agreement or the Member Agreement (as applicable) upon giving us written notice in accordance with paragraph 19.3
A change from ADSLMax to LLU is a change in the service (maybe insignificant but the wording states any alteration. Therefore Orange could be in breach of contract by not giving the required notification of change as per 18.1.1
Many customers moved from ADSLMax to LLU are finding this change to their detriment. Therefore, under 18.1.2 you have the right to cancel giving Orange the required 30 days notice.
If LLU comes to my exchange and I'm moved from ADSLMax to LLU then I will be viewing it as above and exercising my right to cancel in order to move to another provider on ADSLMax or someone who can properly manage and support LLU.
In this day and age of super fast broadband speeds, I really find it difficult to stomach that half a meg can be tauted as "the fastest your line can handle". Its been clearly established that these pathetic speeds are purely down to Oranges LLU network, and its inabililty to perform satisfactorily for many customers- it's either because they can't be ar$ed to upgrade exchanges or they are definitely capping.
What is even more insult to f*cking injury is that fact that not only am I stuck on half meg service for 12 months, for the past two bloody days between approx 6pm to 10 pm my speed has become 300kbs! Are Orange also employing traffic shaping too during the "busy" times?!? What the f*cking hell am I paying for? What next? 56k for £20? Its a bit like paying for a travelcard and London underground giving you a pogo stick to get to work...
Orange constantly told me that half a meg was all my line could handle (although my stats showed attenuation of 9.0!!!). Moving to Sky who said it can handle 19.5meg so looking forward to that i 5 days time.
