I have my internet connection with Orange (formerly Wanadoo, formerly Freeserve) which works fine using my laptop with its built-in wireless card.
Now I've been trying to connect my desktop PC using a Belkin 82.11g 54Mbps wireless adapter.
I've manually configured the desktop to use 192.168.0.2 as its IP address, as opposed to the ...0.1 that the laptop uses. This means that the PC will now connect to the Livebox (prior to this it got stuck on Acquiring Network Address).
However, the computer will not load web pages at all. I've tried Firefox and IE and just got the Server Not Found/Page Cannot Be Displayed messages, respectively.
I've heard that the Livebox can be fussy about third-party wireless adapters, but the setup worked perfectly and without any changes to any settings on my wife's PC before we gave it away, and so I don't know why it's having trouble on mine.
I've seen it suggested elsewhere that I may need to add the router ip as my primary DNS. Does anyone know how I go about doing that?
Can anyone suggest a way to resolve the issue? I'm running XP with Service Pack 2, incidentally.
Is there any chance you could walk me through that step by step? Apologies if my first post gave the impression I know what I'm doing here - I don't, really I was mainly using my very limited knowledge and a few of the Orange help pages.
And, since I posted the original problem last night, my laptop has now come down with a case of the same problem - the connection is apparently there, but no access to the Internet or even the Livebox configuration pages is allowed.
Hopefully someone here can help before I have to go back to a connection-less home and resume the hit-and-hope technique that landed me in this mess in the first place
EDIT: I've uninstalled the Livebox from the desktop, reinstalled it on the laptop and even tried the factory reset on the Livebox itself - but no joy.
Go through the control panel into network connections,
right click your wireless connection and select properties,
highlight internet protocol (tcp/ip) and click the properties button,
make sure the dots are next to the two automatic options,
ok everything and you're done.
Really there's little need to use the Orange software.
Well, if you can fathom it, I've got my laptop up and running with help from Orange's helpline - the whole thing done and dusted in under fifteen minutes.
However, my original problem remains - I can't get my desktop online.
I've tried 192.168.0.2 and 192.168.1.2 as ip addresses, but no joy... Have also tried letting it set itself up automatically, as Elhana suggests. The result is always the same - it says that the wireless connection is set up, but no web pages will load. I can't even get in to configure the Livebox.
And as I say that, the connection drops on my desktop while my laptop, 50cm further away from the Livebox, works fine...
Am beginning to think it's either my adaptor (but that worked fine before) or my PC (which refused to work with a router before, and which has a non-functioning Ethernet port...)

Ok diagnostics time.
Have it try and connect if not already. Make sure it's on the automatic options as above because they make things a lot easier to work out what's going on.
Go to the wireless connection, right click and select status. It is showing connected isn't it? Go into the support tab, what does the address type and IP address show?

[Orange India answer to Belkin adaptoe, is that they d'nt give tech support to wirless adaptors other than their own. Thats the DNS server addresses, some cache page which I've never heard of being used before and the PPPoA setting for routers. Those are pretty much useless for wireless adapters connecting to the livebox, except maybe the DNS but you normally don't need them.
Headache try following the sticky thread and seeing if it helps get your adapter connected.
