I decided to taken the plunge and upgrade from 1Mb to 8Mb with Orange... The upgrade took place smoothly and connection/download speeds were very good! I then received an email from Orange informing me that a further upgrade would be performed to my line on the 9th January which could result in an even faster connection... It seemed to good to be true, and it seems it was!
Before the upgrade my router was reporting an upload speed of over 400kbs which has now been reduced to 288kbs. The download speed has remained the same at 8128kbs. So much for a "faster" connection! I decided to investigate further using "www.speedtest.net", prior to this latest upgrade I was able to upload at 400kbs and download at 4500kbs, this has now been reduced to 200kbs upload and 2000kbs download. So the upgrade has actually resulted in more then a 50% reduction in speed! I have tested this at various times of the day so doesn't appear to be load...
I'm very lucky with my line as I live close to the exchange, so don't think that's the problem... Noise Margin is 25dB Upstream & 13dB Downstream. Attenuation is 27dB Upstream and 23dB Downstream with minimal errors being shown within the ADSL status. BT Wholesale report that my line should be able to run at the full 8128kb.
I have just emailed Orange as a first step to resolving the problem, hopefull they will come back with something usefull! I'll post an update as soon as I hear from back from them....

288kbps is the standard upload speed for an LLU connection, 448kbps is from ADSL Max which you upgraded to first of all.
It's probably best to wait a couple of days to make sure it's not just an initial glitch moving to LLU, try turning off the router for a while each night if possible. When you call Orange they'll want you to have speedtest results and check through a bunch of things before they put through a line test if it gets that far.
I received my response from Orange via email today, I have to admit the reply was quite fast however not 100% happy with the response. It appears to be a standard response to connection problems. I know that nothing has changed with my config since they made the change therefore seems obvious that there's been a problem with the upgrade they performed. The router is connected directly to the BT Master socket, the only other item on the line is a standard telephone which is plugged in via the filter. They have asked me to perfom speed tests at various times throughout the day which I have just started, although it seems the connection is now worse then ever as download is only 528kbs!!!! I'm going to take stats at varous times over next couple of days then get back to them...
It's so frustrating because the only change made was done by Orange themselves at the local exchange... Prior to this the connection was VERY fast, now seems as bad as dial-up at times!
Is there anyone else using the "Langley, Slough" exchange experiencing the same problem??? Just wondering if it's an isolated case or one being experienced by others?
A slow connection can be caused by a number of things. It could be that
the current line equipment set up you have is blocking the broadband
signal, making it a longer process for the signal to reach the livebox.
To rule the equipment out as a factor you could:
Try removing all devices from the telephone line,
Sky/alarm/digital telephone or faxes
Have you got any digital telephones? if so please try unplugging these
If the livebox is connected on a extension cable, please remove as
standard extension cables are not designed for adsl broadband signal
Try the connection direct from the master BT telephone socket, ensuring
all devices on the telephone line are filtered, with any standard
extension cable removed.
Another factor that can cause an issue with slow connection is offline
content. Try deleting your Temporary Internet files and cookies, and
make sure there is plenty of Hard disk space available for these. This
can be done in Internet Options.
Also scan your PC for Spyware as this can slow down your Internet
connection. A search on google for "spyware removal" will find plenty of
free programs that will do this.
If you are still experiencing problems go to http://www.adslguide.org/tools...edtest.asp
and perform a speed test. Repeat this a few times a day for a couple of
days noting your speed & the time of the test.
If they are particularly slow please ring the number below and we can go
through some diagnostic checks and if required escalate this fault.
If you have any further queries then please do not hesitate to get in
contact with us again.
I thought I would try installing the Livebox to see if that would resolve the problem, I had up to now been using my 3Com Router... Setup was fairly simple, performed a firmware upgrade to ensure everything was up to date... The result, no change still next to useless!
System Information (from Livebox) :-
ADSL firmware version : A2pBT009c1.d17d
Connection mode : G.DMT
Type : Fast
Noise margin (dB) : 15.8
Attenuation (dB) : 23.0
Attainable download rate (kbps) : 11040
ADSL status : Connected [0]
Same happened to me when i got moved to LLU, i didnt even want to be, and now Orange cant move me back, and they say its usual for me to get 2.7meg speeds at amax, anytime, when im meant to be on 5.5... the idea of how stupid the people are orangeare is laughable.. "lol"
Just been on the phone to tech support, a whole hour on the number supplied in the email reply only to be told that they cant help with livebox problems and to call another number! Anyhow, to cut a long story short they are going to run a line check sometime during the next 24 hours, need to call them back same time tomorrow for results! I'll let you all know how it goes...
It was quite funny whilst on the phone to support, they got me to run a speed test... As it was running the guy said if it's between 1Mb & 4Mb that he would get them to run a line check... Came back at just over 600kbs, lol.
Just called Orange to get results of the line test... I must be really unlucky because their systems have gone down so they can't give out any results... I asked how long I should wait before calling back and was told that they did not know how long the systems would be offline for and to try again tomorrow! I wonder what tomorrows excuse will be?
Sorry I've not posted for a while... I've kinda given up on Orange! The problem is still not resolved! I received a call from them on Friday stating the problem was with my equipment... I explained that I've used my own router, a speed touch modem & the "Orange" livebox with exactly the same results and the engineer just grunted as said "Oh, doesn't seem like it's your equipment then? Give us another 48 hours and we'll get back to you!" It's enough to drive you crazy, tried calling customer services to cancel contract was told that as I have "a" service I would need to pay in excess of £200 to cancel! It's beyond a joke! I'll update again later in the week...
On a slight side not, just got myself a Nintendo Wii... Highly recomended for taking away the stresses of Orange! The best thing is if your patient you can get one for FREE by following this link:-
Anyone clicking that link should understand it's effectively a pyramid scheme where they get your info and can send you junk mail/sell it on. Only the people who got in early really have a change at getting much from it.
Oranges latest idea seems to have been to lower the download speed on my line... I can kinda see where they are coming from, however I really don't think the problem is with the line and the latest batch of speed tests would kinda show that too! I started off with download speeds of around 5000kbps to 6000kbps, Orange in their wisdom then unbundled my exchange which promised faster speeds! However speed tests showed I was not getting between 1500kbps & 2500kbps, after endless calls and line checks it appears the descision was made to reduce the speed of my line from 8128kbps to 6144kbps... I can now download at between 1000kbps & 2000kbps!
I would laugh but it's really NOT funny... I've so had enough of this and there seems no way out... I've complained 3 times to the ISPA and not had a single response from Orange with regards to any of them...
If your thinking of going with Orange then DON'T!!!!
For anyone interested, here's my stats from router....
Hi PRThomasUK, You are not alone with this problem. My line had just been upgraded(31/1/07) from 2Mb to 8Mb. I too am now getting a slower connection speed than I was getting whilst on the 2Mb connection. My speed test are below. Lets hope to find a solution to this problem. Paul

Speed Down 588.99 Kbps ( 0.6 Mbps )
Speed Up 225.28 Kbps ( 0.2 Mbps )

I've got the same problem. I'm on Weston-super-Mare exchange.
I was on Max with good speeds around 6. They changed me to LLU this week and now the best speed I have seen is 2.7. At peak times it can be as low as 1.
