<Livebox Issues? ~ Can connect laptop (xp pro sp2) but not PC (xp pro) to liveb

Hi,
Hoping someone may have the solution to my problem.
I have connected my laptop with no problems to livebox but pc refuses to connect.
I am using a dell with a BT voyager1010 usb wifi receiver which worked fine with old BT voyager 2000 wireless router.
The pc sees the connection, I have put in the correct WEP on the correct channel, (1), changed the set up to "shared", put the livebox into pairing mode and tried to connect. After about 4-10 seconds the wireless network options are simply relisted with no apparent communication between the two devices.
Solutions I have already tried:
1) Change the channel on the livebox and pc from 1 to 7. Nothing
2) Change the security settings on livebox to WEP only. Nothing
3) Remove security settings on livebox alltogether. Nothing
Is there a reason why this older voyager usb receiver can see but not talk to the livebox? (Still works fine with old router)?
I'm running out of hair to pull out so any help would be much appreciated.
