Too many people take what online speedcheckers say to be the cast iron, must be situation. Why is this? "It says i should get up to 8 meg. that means i should get 8 meg" NO! >UP TO< 8 meg being the important bit. Especially as BT use a system called RAMBO to stabilise you ADSL max speed to a nice level so its speedy and efficient. The speed will get decreased and increased a lot by RAMBO and it WILL fluxuate.
