Signed up with Orange broadband, and got set up last friday. Everything was working ok until yesterday, until it stopped loading up webpages. It says im connected, but just wont load up webpages. Maybe i disconnected when it was trying to download a software update?
Anyway it says that my IP address isnt valid. I try all the reccomended advice, and nothing. So then i read that i should re-install the files, so i try that and then it says it cant communicate with the livebox and may be firewalls causing the problem. Well all the firewalls are off.
Ive tried everything i can think of, and nothing is getting this bloody livebox working again. Tried all the cables, checked all the Internet explorer settings, everything.
May just phone up and cancel the contract.
So my questions are:
1) anyone else had this problem and know what to do?
2) can anyone reccomend a better unlimited broadband for around the same price per month?

Where specifically does it say it's an invalid IP address, in the status for the LAN connection?

You could try forcing the IP address to see if that can get the connection going, also resetting the TCP/IP system of windows, even reinstalling the drivers for the ethernet port and lastly resetting the livebox itself. (You'll need to reinstall or re-enter the username and password for that last option) You don't have to do these in order.
1. For forcing the IP go into the properties of the connection, Internet Protocol(TCP/IP) properties and enter the following:
IP 192.168.1.2
Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0
Gateway 192.168.1.1
DNS Primary 195.92.195.94
DNS Secondary 195.92.195.95
If this one fails don't forget to go back and set them back to the automatic options.
2. For XP SP2, Goto start > run and enter...
netsh int ip reset C:\resetlog.txt
Restart the PC.
3. Try and see if there's new drivers if possible or reinstall the original ones to make sure they're ok.
4. Unplug the livebox, press and hold the 1 button on it, put the power back in. Once you see 3 solid red lights(usually in about 10 seconds) let go of the button and leave it a couple of minutes to restart.
After each part try and close everything and then access a webpage, if it doesn't work try opening 192.168.1.1 to see if that opens.
right well i did the recovery procedure, and then i reinstalled the software. And bingo, it worked!!!
Then i thought to myself "i know, maybe it died because i turned the modem off while it was downloading its software update" So off i went to the configuration thing, and manually downloaded the software update.
Then it dies again!!
So i dunno, maybe its something with the new software update?
For anyone who wants to know, this is exactly what i did to solve the problem:
* rebooted the computer and livebox (turn off pc, unplug power cable, leave for 30 secs, then turn back on)
* ran the ethernet recivery program
* ran the installiation procedure again.
It worked, then died when i updated the livebox software.
Im phoning up tomorrow and cancelling the contract. Im within my 30 day period, so forget being tied to them for a year.
Does anyone have any info on the cancelling procedure? I looked for threards but couldnt find. I assume they will give me a load of bull...

Sorry but what 30 day period is that? From what I knew there is a 30 day trial period but only for the starter package so any with a livebox don't have that. Unless it's something I've not heard of.
your right, there is no 30 day trial on unlimted, which i was pretty upset to hear.
anyway, to give credit where its due, i spoke to two very friendly technical people today at the Orange call centre. They couldnt get my connection going, so they are sending out a usb repair kit monday. in the meanwhile, i have managed to get the broadband working again (for how long i dont know).
now what we pretty much established that the problem was either with the livebox itself, or the firmware. So i have two questions:
1) someone told me i could use a normal usb broadband modem instead of the livebox one? is this right?
2) is there anyway to block the firmware update occuring automatically? i put the firewall up to high, would that block it?
it sounds similar to the problems i had , my connection kept dropping and the pc couldnt validate my ip address with the server even though my modem was clearly working , i could connect my ps2 through it no probs, i finally got advice from here and updated my ethernet card driver as it seemed that it was causing the connection to be unstable ,i put that down to its age as my pc is 4 years old and the highest speeds seen then were about 256mb ,i finally took the plunge and bought new ethernet card and it works fine now ,so id check that out before cancelling
