I've been with Orange since they were Freeserve, and had my broadband since they were Wanadoo.
I originally signed up for the 512Kbs with 2GB monthly cap. In June 2006 I upgraded this to 2Mbs. The payment has always been £17.99 pcm.
Soon after this (just my luck!) I had the email to say that my account will soon be been upgraded to even faster speeds. Some time ago I checked this with adsl.org (I think) and it was around 4Mbs.
But (I'm getting to the point now) when I log into my account, it STILL shows my speed as 512Kbs. It even lets me try to 'upgrade' this to 2Mbs. Needless to say I didn't proceed with this upgrade. I'm curious, but not that curious ;-)
So given the information on my account page is a load of pony, I wondered if there's any possibility that I no longer have a 2GB cap? Given the only alternative (it seems) on offer is unlimited (fair usage, blah...)
If you've never changed package then you will still have the 2 gig cap in place.
Does the 2meg upgrade option have any mention of ADSL Max or a 10 day period once you upgrade? If so then the speed "guide" given is irrelevant, it runs at whatever speed your line can support.
It all depends what system the upgrade puts you onto.
I just tried again (changing my speed) and this time it tells me that their tests show I am already on the fastest speed my line can support. Which is the case, AFAIK.
Actually, I think I've just realised what I've done. On the Change Package option it offers to change me to the Starter Package, which is limited to 2Mbs. Or is it? Given what you said about it running at whatever speed my line can support? Am I paying £3 over the odds? I don't have 'talk service' (what's that?) or a Livebox (use my own router anyway) so that wouldn't be an issue.
Last time I read the T&Cs they were fairly relaxed about the 2GB cap. In that if you went slightly over they wouldn't necessarily do anything, and would give me options if they decided I was going over by too much. I know some ISPs charge exorbitant rates for every MB over the limit (or just cut you off for the rest of the month). Maybe the rules for the starter package are stricter on the 2GB cap?
I've not hit it yet AFAIK. They've certainly never contacted me about it. I remember when I first signed up to BB with Wanadoo they said on their site that they were going to let users monitor their monthly usage at some point (by logging into your account on their website). This never happened before Orange took over, and I can't find any mention of it on the Orange site.
Any idea if Orange have any plans to introduce this? My brother can monitor his usage on his Tiscali connection.
Not heard of anything about an online usage monitor, it's always been one of those things that's often asked about but nobody seens to know if one will ever be introduced.
The package caps have always been relatively relaxed and thats a good part about them, the terms and conditions give them the option of charging or cutting you off for the month I believe but they've never been used and AFAIK there's no plans to. From what I've seen they've always used averages over a couple of months or more before anyone gets onto "the list" and there's a small amount of leeway for going over the cap.
The starter package is limited to a 2 meg line, I don't believe they put anyone on the starter package on ADSL Max so it's limited to the fixed speed services which go upto 2 meg.
