I have moved in to a new flat, and trying to get a new broadband service set up. I was informed by oftel that wanadoo have their service already set up on my phone line (the account was set up by the previous owner who didn't cancel it before he moved out!). To complicate things more, i set up a new phone number when i moved in to the flat so that i didn't get any annoying calls for the previous owner at my new address.
Oftel told me the account details of the previous owner (the wannado account details), but was not prepared to give me the previous owners telephone number for their wanadoo b/b account (data protection, i was told) - they told me the previous owners account info, and my proof of new address were sufficient to get the service removed from my phone line.
I gave wanadoo a ring before putting pen to paper to get a feel for how tricky things were going to be, and make sure that there was nothing else i needed to provide in terms of evidence (largely to speed up the disconnection as far as poss.) They more or less confirmed what oftel had already told me, to be fair.
I set pen to paper, wrote the letter and attached my electricity bill (a copy of) etc, etc. I sent the letter by recorded delivery to ensure that it would be signed at the other end...that was a week and a half (or near enough) ago.
Today, i decided to ring BT to find out if they could shed any light on my "line clearance date". They told me that they didn't have access to that info - phone wanadoo. I did this, and was not filled with confidence by what i was being told. The tech, nice as he was, filled out some electronic form, took some details, and asked for info which i could not provide - i.e. previous owners phone number, and said that someone would ring me back, sometime (no time specified, although granted it is easter week end). To be fair, i haven't waited to see yet, but i am extremely worried that i am going to hear nothing, having not even had as much as an acknowledgement from wanadoo that they even received and understood my letter i sent thru recorded mail.
I need to use the internet to manage my accounts, etc. I currently find myself going back and forth to my parents house, or sneak a few unauthorised minutes in the office at work to use the net, so need to establish the connection as soon as i can.
Has anyone else been faced with a simillar situation? Am i worrying about nothing, or are my initial feelings correct? What should i do?
Make a copy of your phone bill making sure that it shows your address and phone number. Write in saying you are the new tennant, Wanadoo is on the line and try to be clear you've had the phone number changed.
Normally they search by phone number so this time they'll have to go by address and postcode. Once they confirm the details and find the account it "should" be put through for ceasing the broadband from the line.
