For anyone who's interested I've just manag3ed to increase my speed from 2.7 mbit to 5 mbit just by disabling the inventel USB wireless and using my existing PCI wireless card.

The inventel was reading a good strong signal of 40 - 50 mbit most of the the time but when I connected my laptop with wireless I got about 5mbit. This got me investigating why it should be slower on the PC.

Just to be safe I've knocked the speed of the PCI card down to 11mbits which I don't think was possible with the inventel adaptor.
