About a week ago I bought a new laptop with the view to upgrading to the new 8mb service with the "free" wireless router. Anyway, I upgraded via the Orange website, my former service being the £22 per month connection that was a 1.1mb speed.
All went well until yesterday when I received an email from Orange telling them that my upgrade had taken place. Within hours I was losing my internet connection at anything as low as 5 minute intevals, the longest I've managed being just over an hour. I've never had any problems before and we've been with these guys for several years now, right from when it was Freeserve.
I'm still using the speedtouch modem as the new wireless one has not arrived yet, could this have anything to do with my problem?
I've been reading all the horror stories on here about their technical support and am just considering cancelling the whole thing. I only upgraded last week so can I cancel the contract under a 14/30 day clause? I did read all the small print but can't find my printout and for the life of me cannot remember what the criterea with cancelation is.
I've got a similar problem, although I'm on the old speedtouch modem as I refuse to upgrade to wireless on account of it being so iffy and Orange hardly being the most stellar company to seek wireless Internet from. Also the livebox I was supposed to recieve almost a month ago still has yet to arrive.
Anyways, I also received an email earlier this month saying I'd get a speed upgrade on the 2nd January, which went through yesterday. Although I'm now connecting at 3.5 meg I'm getting very annoying intermittent ASDL dropouts which disconnect me. I can reconnect right away as soon as the light is solid again, but it's still ridiculous considering how flawless the service ran before the upgrade on 2.2 meg. Almost heartbreaking, to be honest.
I'll no doubt be on the phone to them tomorrow if this continues, since they're essentially failing to provide a working service and unless they put it back to how it was before - with or without the extra meg of speed, I don't care either way - I'm going to be seriously upset.
This is my first real problem with Orange since I signed up back when they were Freeserve, and used to brush off the "Orange are terrible" stories, but if this disconnect/drop problem isn't fixed I'm going to need to see how far I have to push to escape the contract/get it fixed. I'm not going to tolerate their fobbing off with this - a reliable Internet connection is very important to me.
Then again it could just be problems with the service, but I suspect it's because the junction or whatever the connection is based at is probably overloaded with people. Something tells me it's not though and I've somehow been switched from a decent service to a rubbish one.
If you have both upgraded to 8mb then your line has entered the 10 day training period . During these 10 days you will get varying speeds and disconnections whilst the new service tests and adapts to your line .
If after 10 days it doesnt improve then call them and complain . Until then you will just have to ride it out .
So far today my connection has been on for over five hours which is a record since I upgraded. I'm currently getting an average speed of 3,5Mbps, the highest I've had is 3,8Mbps so far. I'm not really bothered about that, my old 1,1Mbps speed was more than adequate, hardly any noticable differnce to this connection really.
I'm still curious if anyone knows what the cancelation period is because if this doesnt sort itself out soon I'm not prepared to mess around for months getting it sorted. I'm a truck driver and away from Sunday evenings till Friday evening so just dont have the time for this. I just wish I'd found this website before I upgraded but like most people, I'd never had any problem with Freeserve PAYG, Anytime, Freeserve/Wanadoo broadband etc and since Orange took over I still never had a problem at all, so I never imagined all this would happen.

Technically there is no cancellation period for moving between different packages, also upgrading should have put you into a new 12 month contract term.
As Sol said ADSL Max, which is probably what you're now on, has a 10 day period from when you first connect onto it where the system settles. It's often a little less stable and speed can vary quite a bit during this time. Also how it's setup, connected to the line and your internal wiring can vastly effect the service. Even if nothing's changed ADSL Max can amplify any pre-existing problems that may not have been enough to effect the service previously.
Right now it sounds like it's settling down so just wait out those 10 days and see how things look then.
Thanks for the advice guys. Its definetely a lot better than yesterday, it has remained connected for 7 hours and 50 minutes now.
Just one last thing, how long will I have to wait for this livebox thing? I was told in an email it was on its way and would be here within 5 working days, which has now passed. I noticed "the3rdchildren" said they are still waiting a month on. Would I be better off buying my own router and adapters from somewhere like PC World anyway or is the livebox of decent enough quality (once it arrives)?
My Livebox also missed the '5 day period' mentioned in the email. They sent an apology letter and it did arrive a week or so after that hitting the date in the letter. The Talk activation also missed it's promised date by a few days after the Livebox had been installed. I used my existing Linksys router in the meantime.
BTW, although they say the settling period is 10 days, when I had the usual disconnect problems whern it started, the engineer who phoned to help sort it out did say it had now settled and that was after only about 5 days, so it's not a rigid timescale. I think once it decides to go Interleaved if it needs to rather than FAST, then settling is largely done
Things have just turned ugly. My livebox arrived in the post this afternoon so I TRIED to install it but got no further than the start, it keeps giving me a pop up telling me how to disable my firewall, which I have done, yet I can't get past this point. So anyway, I plugged everything in as per the written instructions, turned it all on, and nothing, I couldn't get it to work anyway, though I'm not an expert and dont really know what I'm doing. So I unplugged it and plugged in my old speedtouch modem and re-started my machine and went online, but intstead of my 3,5Mbps speed, I've now got an incredibly slow 160,Kbps and cannot get a faster connection by re-connecting. What the hell have I done and how do I fix this, and preferably get my livebox to install and work?????
After much hair pulling and resiting the temptation to capitulate and ring the Orange squad in India I managed to get it working. It was adobe flash 9 that was preventing me from installing off the CD, so that was swiftly butchered and I installed the livebox with no problems.
All I'm wondering now, as there is no little connection icon in the bottom right of the screen for the livebox, how do I know how fast my connection is? All I can find is the 100,0Mbps thing, which obviously isn't the connection speed. All I know is, its not very fast yet.
You need to log into the Livebox. The IP address to enter into Internet Explorer etc is 198.168.1.1. The log-in ID and password are both 'admin' by default (see Livebox Help file pages for more info). Look under System Information for speeds etc

You don´t actually need the CD at all to install livebox...
This is a good thing for me because i ´don´t do ' microsoft, and flash isn´t available on AMD64 Linux

I tried to install it without the CD as per what I read on here but it just wasn't playing ball with me. At the moment its only giving me a 288,0Kbps connection though.
Now my problem is getting my laptop to work wireless. I've installed it via the cable fine, that works but its just not having the wireless. When I have to chose a network, my laptop picks up the livebox but when I copy in the WEP Key, nothing happens after that, thats as far as I can get.
I'm definetely beginning to wish I'd never bothered with any of this, for all the money the laptop cost me and all the immense hassle this has being, its not worth it.
Did you press the "1" button on the side to pair it up ? . Pressing this activates a 10 minute connection window for wifi devices . You only have to do it once per device . Once its paired you should be able to access the wifi .

Yes, makes no difference.
Using my computers own wireless software, it reads the signal coming from the livebox perfectly but just wont connect. I've turned all the security off but to no avail. Occasionally it will connect for a couple of seconds, they disconnect itself and I'm back at the starting point.
Someone recently said on this forum that the WEP key entry is case sensistive? You need to use upper case. It appears to be accepted, but then you get an error 'waiting for an address' forever and doesn't connect. I hit this problem, but it now works fine.
