I wish I could make my first post here in better spirits, but I've spent several days trying to sort a Wanadoo issue, and then tried various forums for an answer only to be greeted with the torrent of issues people have with this company. Luckily I don't have to endure it myself, However my friend does, so I'm (really) hoping someone may have an answer to her problem.
Basically she simply can't get her wireless adapter to pair with her live box (inventel branded). I'm not a networking guru by any means but I do have a bit of a background in computers, (Bsc computing 1st year).
So I've tried to get it working - firstly (and many times since at the insistance of tech support) trying a simple reinstall - no go obviously, as live box (product code) doesn't get listed when your asked, so you can't input a WEP code. However on the rare occasion there was one listed (2 or 3 times out of god knows how many), they still fail to connect to one another.
The problems continue - I decided to put it on a wired connection (before I ended up ringing them). Reinstall for wired connection, the install requests the IP address, so I fired up network connections, which shows the network as connected with packets sending fine - give the install the IP, which gets verified no problem, then bang - can't communicate with the live box. Hmmmm. So I spent what seemed like for ever trying to get it working through combinations of the install software that comes with it, windows networking, wired and wireless, to no avail.
Eventually I give up, and called wanadoo. The guy I spoke to was actually really good, I told him the problem, and what I'd done. I spent about 3 minutes talking to him, and he said I'd done everything he could think of and stuff he couldn't and suggested a replacement livebox. I said hold on a mo, cause the adapter is running on USB1.1, cause the system didn't have any USB2 drivers, so I'd put some in and try again first - just in case that might be causing the problem, which I didn't believe it would, but you never know.
So next day I install the USB 2 drivers, get the USB2 working with no problems, and try again, with the same results. So I ring wanadoo back, and say I think the live box is broke can I have a new one. And of course I find a monkey reading off a card, saying can you....... blah, for 2 hours. Eventually he tells me to do a factory reset, which completely destroys the live box - only the @ light flashing really fast now. and evetually asks me if I think its broke, cause he's got no idea whats wrong with it. Now I remember why I don't ring these help lines!!
Anyway, eventually my friend gets a new live box, so I go down and STILL the same problem, the adapter can't pair to the live box. OK, so lets do everything from scratch cause that's just impossible right? So I wiped the complete system, completely reinstalled XP, installed the various drivers, got the system to a completely fresh, state, and tried again AND STILL NOTHING. IT JUST WON'T PAIR. NOTHING. the adapter can't communicate with the live box - I tried the wired system again - SAME PROBLEM.
The thing is, it all used to work, it only stopped after she moved her computer - which I've checked and all is fine.
So, and I'm sorry for the long post - but does anyone have any ideas. I was going to recommend she cancel her contract and move to someone else, but from what I've read that doesn't sound too easy.
Any suggestions are welcome, if I solve the problem I'll be sure to report the solution back. But I doubt I'm going to fix this anytime soon.
Make sure you press the '1' button and then tey and get the adapter to connect. You can see a list of paired adapters by going onto the livebox admin page(192.168.1.1 in a web brouser) and click on 'security' and then 'associated devices'. other than that it is either a dud adapter or a dud box. I have never had much trouble with mine. You could always try a rescue disk to compleyly restore the livebox.
Unfortunatly reseting the live box has no effect, nor does using button 1 to get into pairing mode, they still can't pair. The adapter and live box are already within about 1.5 metres of each other, I've tried them side by side as well.
Also I can't get to the livebox admin page, cause manually (through browser), or using the config app that is installed with the software, cause the adapter and live box, can't, won't, pair, and therefore won't talk to each other. This is the same with a wired connection as well, network connections sees the connection as open, and can send packets, but still no communication from the live box.
This is the second live box and adapter, and the same situation exists on both, which is why I reinstalled the OS, just to see if theres anything funky going on there, also all antivirus, firewall stuff is disabled
Sometimes I can get to input the wep code, if I install to that point and when no livebox id's are shown, restart the computer, when it reboots it returns to that point in the installation, and SOMETIMES shows a live box id. I put in the wep code carefully, and in the next step where it says it's finishing the installation, and checking connections it fails, cause it appears it can't communicate with the livebox.
I'm well and truly stumped, but thanks for the suggestions guys.
ITS FIXED, WOO HOO. No Idea how, or why. Basically, my mate rang wanadoo this morning to cancel her contract, (she didn't think she'd have any problems cause she hadn't sent the credit agreement back) but anyway she got caught in the whole reinstalling it thing again, and after a while, when nothing worked, the CSA apprently started asking the person next to him (she could hear them talking) eventually she just asked to speak to the other guy.
When he come on he told her to do it all again, BUT with a wired connection. Again as usual it didn't work, entering the usual IP, or the IP given in network connections, so he told her to put in another number, I've got no idea what it was, but she say's it was completely different to any other she's seen before, alot longer, and in several parts. I've got no idea what it was, but BANG the connection fired up and she's online.
They reckon it's simply not going to work as a wireless connection, so they are sending her a normal ADSL modem, (hopefully she'll have no problems with this), and there giving her 6 month's FREE, they even told her to get me to invoice them for my time!!!!!!!!!! Course she told them she had a computer technician look at it, which I'm not, and I don't run a buisness so can't invoice them, but hey I must admit they appear the have redeemed themselves a little in my eyes, in terms of their customer service.
Sorry I can't share the fix, but she just can't remember what it was they walked her through, but if anyone else experiences this, IT IS FIXABLE, you just need the right CSA.
