Hi everyone.
I am trying to establish a wireless connection between my desktop pc and the Orange livebox. Now I have done as advised and established a connection with an ethernet cable first and everything went fine and I have an internet connection.
So then i tried to get a wireless connection using a belkin wireless g usb adapter. What seems to happen is, after pressing the pairing button, the adapter tries to acquire an ip address, fails and Im informed that wireless connection is disconnected, then it tries to obtain an ip address and keeps on going through the cycle untill I disable connection.
Now after I have disabled the wireless connection, then double click on it to try and connect, it takes me to the screen where I have to enter my wep key, I enter it, my adapter sees the livebox, tries to connect to it and fails to acquire an ip address and the cycle starts again.
I have tried reinstalling the adapter to see if that worked and am still having the same problem, and am really not sure what to do next and would be really grateful is someone had any ideas what to try next. The pc has xp sp2, upto date with windows updates
Oh, and when I enter the belkin utility, it shows up as having very good to excellent signal strength, this does not change and stays constant even when it has failed to keep a connection
I hope I have explained myself clearly enough and again would appreciate any advive.
1. You may be entering the WEP key wrongly. Best thing to do it you have the wired working ok is to log into the livebox config, (192.168.1.1, username and pass both "admin") go into security > wireless connection, copy the key from there so you can paste it in without having to type it.
2. In the belkin utility try setting it as 128bit WEP and then WPA to see if either will work.
3. If it's still not working back in the livebox config go to configuration > advanced > wireless, set it to WPA only if the belkin can do that otherwise WEP only. Let the box settle and try connecting with the relevant WEP/WPA setting and it should be working.
In all these make sure you're in pairing mode by pressing 1 beforehand until the connection is made and you've got an IP, after that you don't need to worry about pairing anymore.
Well the first thing you suggested to try worked, I copied and pasted the wep key and after about a minute I got a wireless connection, so there was no need to take the other steps although I now know a few more things to try if I ever run into trouble again, so all of your advice was very useful.
I'd like to thank you for taking the time to help me out, and after browsing around the forums you obviously help many others out too.
