Hi, am having a few problems with my line just after upgrading to a 3mb from a 2mb, quite a long post but would appreciate any help before i axe Orange after the 10 days are up and either notice it faster than my old 2MB which it should be if the upgrade is 3MB or i can get my older speeds back untill the line problems are sorted out. I will wait it out if its temporary like an exchange problem/Bad weather or the possable line tests.
Price of the current package is 27.99 a month!, but don't see the difference if i switch to the new Orange package from the current wanadoo Broadband Max. Maybe cheaper without wireless and talk yeah, but its the same router/service as far as i can see, plus i don't want the hassle of sending the bloody router back only to get the same problem with a router thats practically the same other than some Orange logo all over it. A little more details in the following lump of info.
A few days ago i noticed a free upgrade option to go from 2MB to a 3MB connection. As i know it depends on distance/lines blah blah blah but now i seem to be going even slower then my previous 2MB. I was happy at the time with 2MB speeds and the average i could get was about 238KB/Sec which i was fine with. Average now with switching over to a 3MB is about 175KB/Sec which is a little annoying at the moment.
When i switched over in the members center to 3MB From the 2MB with the above speeds i was told something about waiting 10 days.
Is the normal mode of operation a line test for 10 working days after an upgrade is requested from the members centre. Since the request to upgrade, the line seems a LOT slower, even slower then when i was on the 2mb before. The package i have used since i joined when they were wanadoo is Broadband Max up to 8MB from Wanadoo that was before they switched to Orange. I only noticed the upgrade from 2 to 3mb a few days ago.
I still have the old router just before wanadoo changed to Orange so i should think the difference would be minimal in livebox revision.
Drivers are the same and cables (Via ethernet) and settings havn't changed. I don't have a phone so the only options are just the filter into the master socket to test with a line into the router connecting up 1 pc. The part that pulls away to reveal the master socket had no wires connecting whatsoever but if im using the master socket anyway it doesn't matter.
xbox360/pc or pc/pc is the max i use, currently just 1 pc is connected just to make sure and speed is the same on both pc's each having a different ethernet adapter.
I have been with wanadoo for a while, was still using it even when they were freeserve and thought the service was great.
A few various tests/info -
dslzoneuk.net -
ADSL enabled up to 8 Mbps.
Your line is capable of 3 Mbps or above
You are around 1.14 kilometres from your exchange
Attainable download rate (kbps) has been 4320 which was when i last left the router on a few days ago. Didn't seem to change download speed though.
Samknows tests-
The following services are available in your location:
ADSL is available in your area
Your exchange is also enabled for ADSL Max services
According to BT Wholesale, your line should be able to support a 3Mbps or greater ADSL connection via ADSL Max.
Standard ADSL RAG results:
You can receive 2Mbps ADSL
You can receive 1Mbps ADSL
You can receive 512Kbps ADSL
You can receive 256Kbps ADSL
You are approximately 1.14km from the exchange (straight line distance).
There appears to a compatibility issue with your phone line. This could be caused by an existing DSL connection, ISDN, a DACS unit, TPON, a pending ADSL order or many other common issues. This will need to be resolved before ADSL can be supplied to your line.
Other than being asked to wait 10 days after the upgrade to 3MB is the slow line problem line tests before the upgrade to 3mb?
Anyone have any experience with line upgrades with Orange....or is that a bad question?

Ok first of all if you upgraded in the last few days then it should have put you into a new 12 month contract which would make axeing Orange that little bit more complicated.

Normally if you already have a livebox and move to a new package on which you'd have one then you don't get sent a new box, the only difference between the old and new ones is the lack of flashing "w" and a little Orange logo, otherwise it's the same hardware.

Within the first 10 days it monitors the line and works out it's stability and then sets a threshold rate for what speeds class as a fault.

It's automated and is just 10 days, not working days. Most issues can't be reported until the end of this time to make sure the system has settled and got everything set.

Ok those stats show a nice attenuation, but the margin is low meaning thats whats limiting the connection, higher speed means it goes lower and under 6 you start getting disconnections. The 4320 is good but the results will vary depending on network busyness and time of day etc.
There is one major bad point about those particular stats (when those were taken), you're under the magic 2848 downstream (sync speed) means it's not able to put you on a 2.5 meg profile so goes for the next lowest which is.... 2 meg.

The line monitoring itself doesn't usually slow the connection but it can be a bit more erratic and variable during the 10 day period.
The main part to note is you're now on a dynamic service, it can and will go up and down in order to try and maintain the best speed it can where as the old connection was fixed at 2 meg at all times. Right now it's best to wait and see how things go once the 10 days are up.
My noise margin was between 6 and 9. Once i unclipped all except wires 2 and 5 from all the sockets my noise margin went upto 20 and my speed is quicker.
Thanks for the info Elhana. I heard from some webpage that it was best to switch off your router late at night so that the line checks can be done easier and then switch it back on in the morning when the checks are done. Not really sure if it does help but i checked earlier and it seems a little better.
It seems MUCH better on the stats compared to the last check i did yesterday but seems to be stuck at 175-180KB/Sec regardless of settings. Could it be temporary while the lines are in red status and would BT cap the line temporarily until the problem is sorted out?
Also had a check on http://usertools.plus.net/exch...anges/ and my location shows up as Virtual paths: Red - The ETA fix time is: 09 Dec 06. Although the weather can be really bad here as well, pretty much sea right round this area
Status Date
red 20 Nov 06
red 13 Nov 06
red 06 Nov 06
red 30 Oct 06
red 23 Oct 06
I also heard that starting about november that a lot of changes were going on with wiring and upgrades in various areas, so maybe that won't help matters.
glenhill2409 when i check my socket wiring when i take off the front there is no wires whatsoever on the front socket. I have tried in the master socket through filters and it currently shows better stats but seems to make no difference for the weird 175-180KB/Sec cap. I will sit it out for a little while and see what happens. I did send an email to Orange and it seemed that they wanted me to ring up some number to speak with some agent but i don't want the dreaded pass the parcel and be fed annoying scripts and being suggested things i have already tried as well as being switched to different people etc. I have read enough on the subject to not want to go there

Doesn't seem to be any consensus on that point, other than that it's better to have the router powered off at the time of the upgrade if you think it will synch at the full 8Mbps.
A lot better The earlier ones, both downstream and upstream, were awful for your attenuation. There was certainly something strange going on earlier.

You're probably still on a 2Mbps BRAS rate. You can check at
I agree with JohnM, those stats look so much better. The way the BT system is supposed to work is that if those stats and sync speed keeps nice and high for 3 days then it'll up the data profile so you'll then get actual faster speeds.
Just pulled down a file at about 750kb/s lol but it downloaded quite quick so it didn't get much time to stabilise before the file finished but it did hit 700 ish for a little while and im actually amazed, speed went up just in the last few minutes of posting this. Must of upgraded the exchange or something, pretty nice christmas present =)

Thanks for letting us know. You were on fast mode on your earlier stats. Seems you've been put on interleaved mode as a result of the earlier instability. Judging by glenhill2409's posts you'll be on interleave permanently now. It's not worth worrying about this unless you're having problems with latency-sensitive apps such as Gaming or VOIP.
ISPs can request that BT move the line back to fast mode but not sure how far you'd get phoning Orange with this request. Posts on here indicate that Orange provide as little info about ADSL Max to their front-line phone staff as they do to their customers

hehe, well Orange can get it changed back to fast, but of course frontline can't do that themselves.
