I have a 6mb connection with a Speedtouch 330 ADSL modem
(please refrain from laughter!)
I'm running Windows XP service Pack 2.0 and have recently performed a nice clean reinstallation of the O/S
All the drivers have been installed including some nice open source virus protection and spyware removal packages.
Now here is my problem when browsing the internet I am randomly disconnecting after a period of time.
When I try and reconnect for some reason my password has changed to something else and I get a ppp has been terminated error grrrrrrrrr not impressed lol.
The connection has been setup manually following the guidelines off Oranges website which includes making sure the TCP/IP settings and LCP etc are configured as they should be.
I have downloaded the latest Speedtouch 330 fast ADSL2 drivers which in theory should support my nice 6mb line only problem is it isn't happening lol
So the connection randomly bombs out I have no way of checking the modems idle setting due to it being a USB device
I have checked the connections, replaced the ADSL filter,
And have come close on several occasions to kicking the living daylights out of my Speedtouch 330 modem.
What is the deal with the Customer Support guys? at least employ somebody who knows what they are talking about and can problem solve I was expected a helpful response not some numpty dribbling he's words whilst trying to read from a script
I'm at my wits end highly p****ed off with the customer service and desperatley need a solution before I tear the rest of my receeding hairline out arrrrrrrgggggggghj! lol
However, I would strongly recommend replacing the ST 330 with a router; the ST 585 wireless router is a bargain at £30 all in from DSL Depot (B grade stock). That's what I'm using and it's been no problem at all.
IMO the 330 was really only ever designed for lower speeds ....although the upgraded drivers 'should' allow the modem to work at higher speeds.
Of course the other advantage of a router is that you can turn the PC off without losing the connection; especially useful if you are on the Max service where frequent disconnections can cause your speed to be adjusted downward at the exchange.
haha yeah my conclusions were gearing towards the dreaded speedtouch
I may well indeed proceed to dropkick the bloody thing into orbit sometime soon
Even with the updated speed modem driver support still no luck it's like Orange have a employee who's job description is to target unsuspecting individuals and hit the disconnect buttion at random intervals.
The funniest aspect about the whole internet disconnecting saga was the customer support now that was a bloody barrel of laughs
I had some guy who after being bombarded with simple stuff like TCP/IP settings decided the best way to resolve my problem was to hesitate check he's script and pray to god that TCP/IP was covered.
Of course it wasn't and he laid he's get out of jail cards on the table which was the following response
" errrmmm i'll put you through to technical support they will know mate"
So after a brief hesitation I Decided to go ahead and ring the technical support only to be greeted with the worst music after 15 minutes of waiting and hearing the operators dull drone my ears through in the towel and the phone was promptly slammed down with a few swear words for good measure.
The next plan of attack was to email Orange hoping for a response
A day later I opened my inbox to be greeted with a email from Orange
Great stuff I thought
After scanning the contents of the email the only technical information I could gather was a set of basic instructions stating
Check your modems connected
Check my modems connected???
what you think my modems doing the bloody riverdance
Just goes to show how poor the customer service really is
You only have to read this and other forums to know just how bad the Orange CS really is ...it's been said that moving house or committing sui@ide are less stressful options than talking to Orange.
The classic answer to one poor sod having problems was "we don't support Internet Explorer 7"! Whats that all about???
Anyway, hopefully a router may help you solve your problem

This is true - my poor aged mother just called them for help as she is being disconnected every 10 mins or so. After waiting forever to get though, and then going though various things, the guy asked her to unplug the modem. She explained she would have to put the phone down & it would take her a moment ot two as she is elderly & had to move the desk to get at it. You guessed it - he had gone by the time she got back to him!
After having no service as such for a week and little help from Orange I think she is going back to knitting & complaining about hoodies!!
