Broadband connection is so weak that I am unable to use my laptop via its wireless connection. I use my desktop pc via a Lynksys Wireless G ADSL gateway connected via ethernet cable to the pc (I don't have wireless on the desktop pc as it runs with Windows 9.
My laptop is Window XP and connects to the Lynksys router via its PCM1a wireless card. I have been using this setup for 2 years now with little problem apart from ensuring that the laptop is situated so that is can get the signal from the router.
In the last week or so (could be a bit longer than that as I don't always use the laptop to connect to the internet) I have had Extreme problem maintaining my Wireless link to the internet on the laptop. On examining the internet connection light on the wireless router it would seem that this is often very weak which ties in with the internet connection from the pc having a lot of 'go slows'.
I am presuming that when the Broadband connection is weak this then causes the more susceptible wireless connection to break. I am heartliy sick and tired of resetting my wireless connection on the laptop and find that really it is impossible to use. Could certainly not use it for any important transaction in case it drops out part way through.
Any thoughts, advice please. My nextdoor neighbour is also Broadband and he agrees it is mis-behaving at the moment.
Thanks but I have to say that my wireless was working perfectly until a couple of weeks ago and I haven't changed anything. Last time I had problems with the wireless (because it was incorrectly configured) I was advised to change the channel and couldnt find any that was better than the one I am currently using. Also there is still the problem that the non-wireless connection is also rather obviously not as good as it used to be.
Still the quality of the broadband connection or even if it's coming through at all shouldn't effect the wireless signal.
As for not changing anything, a lot of people don't but suddenly get wireless problems, as it's wireless it could be any number of things, like someone nearby getting a wireless video sender, router on the same channel, an 802.11n (pre-n) router or something else that happens to interefere with the frequency you happen to be using.
If it wasn't for your neighbour saying their broadband is misbehaving then I'd say it sounds like an unexpected router fault as it's effecting the broadband connection and wireless. Still could be as maybe the problems are unrelated.
Have you tried running a speedtest through the wired PC to see what you're getting? That would give an indication of the speed. Also if you have another modem available then give that a test to see what speeds thats showing.
Thanks for reply.
Have come to the conclusion that you are quite correct.
Tonight I cannot connect the laptop via its wireless card At All.
Am so fed up as have tried just about everything I can think of including several gos at my Linksys Wag54G setup which always takes an age to reconnect, wiring laptop directly to the router via the ethernet cable (internet connection great !) and I have now added query on Linksys forum but am not at all hopeful of a solution from there.
I conclude it is either:
The router which has lost it 'wireless capability'
The Wireless adaptor Cardbus
or I have done something to some setup somewhere on one or other of the two computers but no idea what and I am pretty careful what I do and don't do. I was by the way a computer 'professional' of 30 years standing unfortunately though not in the field of networks.

Hi ref above:
A couple of things, does your neighbour also only have problems with his wireless connection ie wired ok wireless poor connection?
Does the problem only manifest itself in the evening ?
If you both find the same problem occurs with the wired connection this suggests a problem at , or from your exchange.
If it only occurs on your wireless connections, then local interference in the radio spectrum is the possible cause.
If this is the case, I know this sounds crazy, but do you have a street lamp very near to your houses ? and does the problem occur after the street lamp has come on ?
Reason I'm asking is that there have been instances of faulty street lamps producing enough radio interference to swamp the radio signal from a wireless router. The cause is usually the ' bulb ' coming to the end of its life, sometimes evidenced by flickering and a portable radio picking up ' static ' when near the lamp.
It may not be your problem but this affected several houses in a cul-de-sac, all with different isp's, poor wireless connections after 4.30 pm ( had been ok all summer ) but plug the ethernet in and good connection!
Thanks all.
It seems that it was a problem with my router and not with anything else (sorry Orange, BT if I suggested it was anything to do with the telephone line, internet connection).
I have just spent at least an hour on the 'free' phone with Linksys support (India I presume) and have upgraded the firmware on the router. Suddenly and miraculously the signal light returned to my wireless adaptor and the laptop was reunited with the internet.
So thank you patient Linksys lady. The telephone line was not good but she was excellent.

Ps. Not caused by street lamps - I live in the middle of nowhere and we don't have any of those. Quite surprising we have Broadband really !
My next door neighbour Is BT but he finds it just as hard to get fixes to his line as everyone else so am very glad it was not the line (this time !).
