After being on the wanadoo/orange 1,1Mbps broadband service for a few years and getting that speed at no problem, I upgraded (very stupidly in heignsight) to the 8mb livebox thing. At first I was still using my speedtouch modem and after about a week my 1,1 connection speed was replaced by newer speeds of up to 3,8Mbps which seemed about right as Orange said my line was capable of 4Mbps. Then I put the livebox on (a total disaster as per my other posts) and my connection plumted down to neigh on dial-up speeds and even if I put my speed touch modem back on, it wont go over about 660,0Kbps.
Obviously a 512Kbps connection is totally unacceptable and from reading in here, it seems that Orange fob you off with "thats the most your line can handle" which doesnt stand up to reason due to what I've just said.
All I'd like to know is, will my speed go up in this 10 day period, or am I likely to be lumbered with it?
Maybe I'm trying to rush things but I'm back at work on sunday night and I'll be away all week as per usual and could do with getting some clarity on the situation whilst I have an oppertunity to do something about it.
Test1 comprises of Best Effort Test: -provides background information.
IP profile for your line is - 152 kbps
DSL connection rate: 448 kbps(UP-STREAM) 416 kbps(DOWN-STREAM)
Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 115 kbps
It will go up and down for 10 days . Be patient and let it settle out . This isnt a livebox problem or caused by anything youve done . Its the way the Max service works .
That is true, you have ti give it ten days to settle down and will get some disconnections.
Try that speedtest everyday, the profile should hopefully increase.
Also, how far from the exchange and have you checked the socket wiring?
I dont know how far from the nearest exhange I am, is there any way to find out.
As for the wiring, that may be a problem. We have a bit of a dodgy phone socket thingy. It worked fine on the old Orange broadband/speedtouch though, would it make such a massive difference for the livebox?
Although I agree that you need to wait out the 10 day period that is an awfully large drop in speed and the margin and attenuation make out as if something major has effected the phone line. Could be the wiring or socket, hard to know without checking it out in the test socket if you're able. Could also be something on the line or at the exchange, could have been coincidence with the livebox connected or maybe a loose joint in the socket?

How would I go about checking the socket? If it is broken is it something that can be fixed myself with parts from a DIY store or does it have to be BT that does it?
I'm quite sure it is my socket causing my desktop pc to run slow. I moved it around a bit, turned off my livebox, restarted with a new connection and my stats are now as follows.
Well you can get replacement sockets, even ones with built in filters to make things a little bit neater. If it's the BT master socket then it may be worth pursuing them as technically the master socket is the end of their system.
Try only having wires 2 & 5 being connected in the master socket and the extensions. I did this and got alot less attenuation on the line and my speed increased.
You are quite a way from the exchange which won't help.
I just did another speed checker and its saying I'm running at 241Kbps.
Now though, my laptop wont even work online. Its connecting to the livebox but wont load anything at all, despite it being an excellent signal and only 2 or 3 meters from the box. Yesterday it was working, all be it on the most painfully slow internet connection I've ever known, even worse than dial-up.
Sorry for being so slow, but what exactly are wires 2 and 5?
In most telephone sockets there is the ability to connect upto 6 wires. The genearl rule of thumb for the master and all extension sockets is that only wires 2 and 5 need to be connected. They will be numbered in the socket itself where they are connected.
The other possibility is that you have a stuck profile.
