I noticed thru reading on here that the member centre on oranges home page nows lets you upgrade for free, subject to a new 12month contract, but on mine it says 7mb and that that is not guaranteed, is that therfore taking into account distance from the exchange as i'm wondering why they limited it to 7mb and yet others say 8mb. i'm only 930metres from exchange!

That and ADSL Max doesn't limit the speed normally. If you can connect at the maximum speed then it'll catch up so you actually get that speed.
That being said it'll do the reverse too, lower speed to try and keep the connection stable.
As mentioned it's all down to the wiring and how good a signal you get.

I had up to 8mb synch was over 5000 speed was 3.81 this was with Orange through BT max system. Between BT and Orange they turned it off for some reason best known to them. Then Orange stopped using the system for a while so I could not get it back.
This week they are using it again and Orange have agreed to put it on again however only up to 3mb when I know it will take faster. Also I have to sign up for another 12 month contract when I did not have to before.
I have rewired all my sockets and replaced all filters and the synch now is always above 8000 so in theory I should get faster speeeds than I was getting last time.
ADSL firmware version : A2pBT009.d16m-1
Connection mode : G.DMT
Type : Fast
Noise margin (dB) : 28.1
Attenuation (dB) : 37.0
Attainable download rate (kbps) : 8256
When they say up to 3mb - have they got a system to stop it at that or will it be up to 8mb and it will settle down to the speed it can take.
Well i just got upgraded today... connected at the Full 8Meg speed but not a lot difference in speeds... but i noticed that my Noise Margin has dropped from its average which is 28 to about 6.2, is this normal?

Hard to comment on what exactly's gone on there without looking at the account itself, which we can't do like this.

The attainable rate is not your sync rate. There should be an upstream and downstream rate just below those stats which is the one you want to look at. From that noise margin I don't expect you're sync'd at the maximum speed when you copied those details.
On Max it should sync at the best speed it can, the data profile can take sometime to catch up if it's been lowered previously. Also BT can cap it in order to make it more stable and it can also get stuck on occasion.
The main bit to know really is to go through the BT speedtest site and make a note of the sync rate and data profile it says you're on etc.
Well my speeds are improving... as i am on the ADSL Max 10 day test will it still be ok if i turn my rouer off every night???.. here are my latest results...

Having done the 10 day period - I would leave router on.
Thats a debatable topic. Some think it's best to stay connected as much as possible, others find that having the router off for a period each day helps the system recognise the line resync's at the same speed each time (good stability indication) and can on occasion help work the speed up if it starts off slow.
It is not as simple as plugging the router in and expecting to get speeds of 8 mb.
Very true, plus it's not possible to get an 8meg download speed on ADSL Max, apart from in the online guides they keep that fairly quiet, you can sync at just over 8 meg but the highest data profile is 7.15meg for downloads.

First point to consider is how fast is your computer anyway? I thought so - it's slow before you even connect to the internet.
That and connecting a non-updated, non-firewalled, non-anti-virus'd, non-anti-spywared PC is just asking for trouble. Anyway running all that stuff, especially some of the bigger programs can make your PC run slow anyway!
Just takes experience to know what you can get away without and how to avoid most of the problems in the first place.
Well on my Second day on ADSLMax... about an hour ago i Lost the net completely and my Router was trying to sync the adsl line but no luck so i re-booted the rooter and its been fine since but it has sync'd at 7840 downstream this time hhmmmm
