After many requests, and finally receiving my MAC code, I have also been offered a free month by Orange.
To add to my dilemma, I contacted IDNet (who I'm planning on going to) to ask if the Livebox would suffice until I get a new router, and the response from them (very honest and prompt - I'm really not used to that) is that they can't be sure one way or the other.
So - Do I wait - take advantage of my free month, risk similar problems getting my MAC code and then migrate.
Do I migrate right away?
Does anyone know if the Livebox is locked to Orange or will I be able to use it for the first week or two?
You should note that, right now, I have no serious problems with Orange (apart from my complete lack of faith in them)

Similar with me too i got a free month but went all the same, IDNet will take a date for when u want a migration date as long as its within the 30 days from when ur MAC was issued but at the end of the day its for you to decide whats best for you.

It's locked to Orange, can be unlocked but it's very technical and I don't even know if it works or can be done on the current firmware.
Technically it'll syncronise to the new connection but entering a non-orange username means the box won't even try and connect, it just sits in the syncronised state.
IDNet supply broadband routers, dunno how good they are but why not get them to suppy one before you cancel your Orange subscription, then you can move from one to the other without interupption? That's what I'm thinking of doing.
Use up the free month and migrate near the end of it.

Yeah usually you'll find cheaper prices than ISP's for equipment but if you choose to buy direct then usually if they say there's a problem with it then they replace it directly. Saves hastle by not having to get in touch with where you got it from and explaining the details.
The benefit of buying direct as far as I'm concerned is that it comes pre-configured for the service, and they will be more inclined to give help with the setup and good support in the future if they have supplied the hardware.
That's worth the few quid extra, imo, but maybe that's a bit hopeful.

Very true but as long as it's a UK ADSL modem/router then there's usually little need to change the settings other than to put in the username and password. Pretty much all IPStream connections, and ones that run both LLU and IPStream, use the same settings for consistancy so you rarely need to alter them.

I get your point but IDNet support is brilliant free and they don't care what router or set up u use they will help you whatever, not a call centre in site if your thinking of going to them or need more info check out IDNetters forum or their own forum on adslguide if you havn't already.

Well I made my mind up and went and bought a Netgear DG834. Took less than 5 mins to get running with the Orange account. I've now put my migration request in to IDNet - so it's just wait until it happens. I'm starting to feel strangely liberated
I've ordered a Speedtouch 585 from DSL Source at £20 less than IDNet.
I'm hoping IDNet will help me to sort out any set up problems, as one of the reasons I got the Livebox in the first place was that I'd had authentication problems setting up my old ADSL router to run the network, and Orange (or Freeserve as they were then) would not give me any help at all. The Livebox sorted me out and I haven't had any major problems with it, I'm changing ISP for emailing difficulties that apparently can't be sorted out.
Do I ask for the MAC number first, or wait for the new router to arrive? How long does it take to get the MAC number, can they give it over the phone? And if I ask for one, are they likely to cut me off before I can transfer to IDNet?
Usually they can't give you the code over the phone when you request it but once it's onto your account any department can usually give that out to you.
They should only cut you off once word comes back through BT that the line transfer is complete. The MAC code has upto 30 days to use it so you don't have to give it over straight away once you get it, requesting it straight away means you can use it as soon as you get the router or before if you choose.
