MER stands for "MAC Encapsulated Routing". Basically the MAC address of the router is used to allow it to connect to Sky's network rather than using a username and password as with PPPoA. It also means that routers not supplied by Sky will not connect although most 3rd party routers that support MER do allow the MAC address to be entered manually.
Any Sk y router can be used on any line so it would seem.
I'm currently using my son's Netgear DG834GT and it obviously works on his line as well.
Currently they're sending out crappy Sagem routers which are giving all sorts of issues for people.
It seems that PPPoA connections still work even if you've been switched over to a MER connection, something to do with using a different VCI. Don't believe that everyone will be switched to MER as it's only the recent DLink & Sagem routers that work that way & would mean a mass replacement exercise.
When I get my Sagem it's very easy to get the username & password & I'll probably get my DGN2000 up & running.
Guess we should apologise to saayinla for rather hijacking his thread.
Successfully over to S K Y , although still awaiting their router.
Currently on 15.3meg down & 1.1meg up so not so bad.
Out of interest, does Sky enforce any download limit as I am a heavy user. I cant afford to be capped, although I do my downloads at off peak period . According to o2 (now Sky), they have a cap of 100-250Gb.

Just spent this afternoon getting broadband for a relative who lives more or less next door to the BT exchange. Only LLU service was Orange. LOL!! Went with PlusNet who say he should get 7.5Mb download which is not bad at all. I will report back next week once his line is activated as it will be the first time I have dealt with PlusNet.
As for me well PlusNet say around 5.5Mb download for my line but with me having Sky LLU I should be able to get speeds of 14Mb download.
tinytime, any updates?
Did you get your Sky router sent out?
What are your stats like now?
Also have you managed to set up your own router with the username/password hack and if so any improvements in speed?
Thanks

Eventually got my router on Wednesday & it was a Dlink which isn't too bad. However, I extracted my username/password and pasted into my DGN2000 & have been running that ever since.
The DLM completed Tuesday after only 5 days leaving me on 15meg down & 1meg up. Quite happy with that.
Does the DGTeam firmware on the DGN2000 not allow you to tweak the profile on Sky broadband. I have mine running at 6dB on Orange at the moment. Have you not seen how low you can go just out of curiosity?

I'm back on the standard firmware at the moment, but I've read reports that very few have made any tweaks stick. As for the speed I think that once the DLM has completed you're virtually on a fixed profile speedwise.
Anyway I'm happy enough with my speeds , whereas with 0range it was necessary to tweak because of the 10dB profile.
Sounds a good idea, I may bring my DGN3500 back online if I can get 14 meg down from it, cannot tweak it. The reason like you for tweaking the DGN2000 was to lower the 10dB to 6db while on Orange.
Would you be do kind to PM me the exact method used to downgrade your Sky router so you could get the username and password?
I've done some searching but came across a jar package which I am unsure what to do. If you could PM what you did then I can hit the ground running once the DLM has got my line to the max.
I would really appreciate this....

If you'd PM an email address then I'll happily give you lots of details about this & where to get helpful info etc.
