Hi
I got a Toshiba P100 laptop at the end of February and wasted days trying to make it connect to the Livebox. My daughter's Fujitsu had no problems at all.
Since then I have been using a PCMCIA wireless card. I found this posting today and it works fine for me - thanks very much. Now I can the card back to my (other) daughter.
In the desktop step 7 I went to 'Configuration', then 'Advanced', then 'Wireless' - can the order of these have changed ?
I will post a link to here on the Toshiba site, as people still seem to be struggling.
There isn't an order as such. Either you have a single or no security option set or the dual one, usually with the dual option if a system will connect to it then it will using the higher WPA option.
JW you are a star!
Spent the remainder of a miserable Sunday afternoon trying to connect my Dell laptop without success (The Orange software kept telling me my firewall was turned on when it clearly wasn't at the time!) - came across this website and...Bob's indeed your fathers brother! - Your solution did the trick.
You've probably saved me hours of grief speaking to someone at Orange, only to be told eventually it's the fault of the laptop and to talk to my 'laptop supplier' - well done and thanks for sharing
Can anyone help? I tried the solution from this thread, but it didn't quite work.
When I chose "no security" on the Livebox configuration, the laptop will connect but it will say it's not connected, and the symbol in the notification area has the red cross on it.
When I try and use either WEP or WPA security, it doesn't work at all.
It also disconnects quite a lot, but then has no trouble reconnecting. However, it's so often that it's annoying.
When connected to the internet, it bizarrely shows this in the Wireless Networks screen:
Have you tried connecting to the Livebox with a wired connection ? If you have, do you still get the frequent disconnections ?
My gut feel is that you will find the wired connections works normally, but if it does not, it is likely to be a problem with your line / exchange.
However, if the wired connection works, this would indicate a wireless interferrance problem from another device in your or a neighbours property.
To overcome this, go into your Livebox setup and select a different channel. You might be lucky and select an interferrance free channel first time, on the otherhand, you might have to try several different channels before you get one that works.
If you do not know how to access the Livebox setup :-
- use a wired connection and open a new internet browser page
- type in this address http://192.168.1.1/
- click on the link to access the configuration pages
- the user name and password is "admin" for both
- once you are in there, select "security" then "wireless connection", here you can change the channel number
I've got a live box over in France.
I use the wireless feature with my laptop and I've never had good service until I followed the advice on this thread and switched to WPA security,
The problem was that I kept losing my connection. I could repair the connection but after a while the connection would fail again. This would manifest itself with a 'Page Not Found' in my browser but with the monitor in the bottom right of the screen reporting that everything was still fine - (Signal strength: excellent, staus: connected)
At first, I thought I might be suffering interferance from a radio mast close by - I mean, how else could you explain something that worked only intermitently. Computers are consistent, stubernly so - iti either works or not.
Anyway, it turns out this dual security was the problem. Brilliant work, thanks again
[Dear JW, Thanks for advice. Being a little dim can you clarify some of the steps?
Step 8 - Right click on system tray icon?
Steps 10 - 13 Are these all done on desktop computer?
What changes do i make to laptop?
Cheers
There's an icon in the bottom right, next to the clock, for wireless connections. Hold the mouse over each until you see one mentioning wireless then follow the steps.
10-13 are a comination. You change the livebox security settings using the desktop and then try to connect with the laptop. Something to note, you may want to remove the settings by going into the "change order of preferred networks" on the connection screen, else when trying to connect it may use old settings and not be able to connect.
am gonna have one son in the morning and he's got one
mum
Went to your first post did the steps and worked wonders!! thanks for your advice. I even went and bought a dongle!! So i could use his laptop in bed - No, it was to use at my mums!! honest
this is also a new laptop but i took it round to a friends to help with xbox live (another thread another forum!) brought it back and not been able to use it since.
I have an Orange Livebox. It worked both wireless and with ethernet, but I had to reload my computer. I started to reinstall my connection with the Livebox and now it works only with ethernet. I have NETGEAR wireless USB Adaptor that I got from Orange.
I phoned many times to the Orange team and I did all they suggested.
I put Livebox into "Pairing" mode and if I try to connect wireless through Windows I get the message “Windows is unable to connect to the selected network. The network may no longer be in range. Please refresh the list of available networks and try to connect again”.
I tried to connect wireless from Netgear CD and sometimes I do not get any Wireless Network Name (SSID) and other times it is "acquiring network address" but it does not connect.
Then I selected no security but I also get "Acquiring Network Address".
I also tried changing the channel but I got the same result.
I read and followed this thread when I bought an Acer netbook for my wife. It just would not connect wirelessly. My only other connection is another laptop which connects fine wirelessly. The Acer runs XP and the other Vista.
I followed the instructions and nothing happened....until after each time I made the change to the configuration of the livebox, I disconnected my existing wireless connection. When the Acer was the only wireless signal I could get it to connect.
So the big question remained, "Once the connection had been set up on the new Acer, would it still be able to connect even with my other laptop connected as well?". The answer is yes it does - it seems the other wireless signal was interfering with the signal for set up but has no effect now. How wierd is that?
It only took me 9 hours of fiddling over 4 days to figure this out. Wasn't technology meant to make life easier?

I’ve received my new Orange live box BUT when I try to use the install disk I keep getting error messages saying it can’t connect. I’ve also tried to use the Ethernet cable but again still get error messages. The network connection icon blinks to say it’s trying to connect but then gets a red cross thru it and then re-tries to connect and again gets the red cross thru it. Using the Ethernet cable I just get an error message. The error codes are 800, 811, 812
The PC has a lot of info and I didn’t want to go down the road of a re-format.
