Yes into OE. But can't get IE6 to connect. strange!
Very strange if you can connect to Orange webmail.....how did you connect to that without using a browser ?
I've tried again and what happens is: I click on Outlook Express and the connection already established disconnects and a new connection box appears. If I click connect on this, the emails start to download. The connection is via Orange broadband, no mention of Speedtouch in the list. I've tried to connect IE after this but it doesn't connect. In Modems, in the Control panel there is no mention of the Speedtouch modem or any way of adding it. It is in Devices but not under the 'Modems' heading.

It sounds like its set to disconnect after checking emails open Outlook Express > Tools > Options > Connection Tab and see if "Hang up after sending and recieving is ticked if it is untick it.

I'll check but it doesn't hang up after sending and receiving, it hangs up before sending then asks to connect again.

Then that could be another setting causing it.
Tools > Accounts
Highlight your email account and click properties,
Go to the connections tab.
You can set a specific connection here but it may be best to change it to the LAN option, OE will then assume you're always connected and try to access your email. You just need to remember to make sure the connection is established before going in.
I checked it isn't set to hang up.
I'll try the LAN setting. Thank you.
I've been playing this morning and I have found I can access Google and do a search for something but when I click on any of the links in Google the green bar goes half way then stops! Can't access Yahoo or Orange or sites in my favourites.
Tried using the OpenDNS addresses in Network Connections > Properties > Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) > Properties then click "Use following DNS Server addresses" and add :
Primary DNS 208.67.222.222
Secondary DNS 208.67.220.220

I agree does usually indicate a MTU problem.

The cause of this is incorrect network adapter Maximum Transmission Unit or MTU setting. You need to change the MTU setting on the computer using DRTCP.
If you can not access the site you will have to obtain the programme from a friend or at work. Once you have the programme double click on it to run.
First make a note of the current settings.
Fill in the programme settings as per the web pages above - SAVE - EXIT AND REBOOT COMPUTER.
If you can not access the pages to see settings then they are as follows:
TCP Receive Window = First try 55600 with 1430 below. Then try 51048 with 1458. (RWIN)
Window Scaling = Yes
Time Stamping = No
Selective Acks = Yes
Dial Up (RAS) MTU = First try 1430 if no luck try 1458
Path MTU discovery = Yes
Black hole detection = default
MAx duplicate Acks = 2
TTL = 64
If you are using a USB modem put the MTU value in Dial Up (RAS) MTU
If you are using a network card to connect to router put the MTU value as follows. Select your Ethernet Card (NIC) under Adapter Settings and enter there.
If you are using a wireless connection select your wireless adapter under Adapter Settings and enter there.
Make sure that your router does NOT have a lower MTU than the PC.
Once you can access webpages go to pages above to calculate your best RWIN depending on the speed of your connection. You can also optimise the settings at: http://www.dslreports.com/tweaks

Thank you. This sounds complicated, but I'll have a go. Not sure about this line what does it mean by 'with 1430 below'? TCP Receive Window = First try 55600 with 1430 below. Then try 51048 with 1458. (RWIN)

These are just two MTU settings that have been found to work.
MTU 1430 then RWIN is 55600 If no luck try:
MTU 1458 with RWIN 51048.

Thank you, thank you, thank you, you've done it!!! I downloaded Dr TCP on the other PC and installed on W98. Changed the settings, started the PC again and got straight onto all the web sites and AVG uploaded straight away. I'm writing this on my W98 PC. I can't thank you enough. I'm glad you are all here to solve all our problems. Thanks again Servalan.
