Have spoken to a supervisor and have refused to hang up untill someone has spoken to BT. Have just been informed that BT closed the fault for no apparant reason on the 16th.
My calls to Orange since the 16th have been pointless.... No wonder there have been no updates. No engineers have been working on this. I can't believe not one of the agents out of the numerous ones I have spoken to have picked up on this.
I now have to start from scratch again
I'm not happy and will be changing my ISP as soon as this fault is fixed... If it ever gets fixed.
On some occasions BT will close the fault but the Orange system won't pick up on it, leaving whoever you speak to on the phone believing it's still with them being looked at.
To er is human, to completley f**k up takes a computer!!!
Even so, I asked on numerous occassions for the agents in FSD to talk to BT Workgroups and they advised me they had. They can't have, otherwise they would have been told the fault had been closed.
I have been with Wanadoo for 14 months and not had 1 problem. My parents have been with Wanadoo for 18 months and have had no prblems. They too have been experiencing connection problems for the last 2 weeks. Different exchange... Coincidence??
FSD don't deal with seperate faults, except with a few system glitches they fix they're not involved with the faults process itself.
Problem is the system normally talks between Orange and BT just fine. When it doesn't however it's normally only spotted after a reasonable period of time, enough so the fault is closed by BT.
Yes.... Orange suggested and booked the engineer to come out after they spoke to BT.
Good, it's better if you get an ADSL-trained Openreach Engineer for this kind of issue.
I'd recommend not using the phone for several hours before the appointment time. Even better disconnect all phones, provided Orange have given BT your mobile as a contact number.

What's a HR dis fault??
High Resistance disconnect(ion).
Point the Engineer to this thread and maybe s/he'll post tellng us what the problem was.
My phone has been unplugged now on and off for 4 weeks so I doubt a few more days will make any difference.
I don't think BT have passed on my mobile number so better plug it in the morning he is due to arrive.
I will certainly point him to this post... If he isn't willing to comment I will ask as many questions as I can and take notes. Not sure what he says will make any sense to me, but hopefully some of the more technical people that read this post will be able to decipher what he's said.
I just hope he fixes the problem... whatever it is.
It just seems a bit weird that for the past 18 months I have had a trouble free connection. As soon as Orange take over things go a bit Twilight Zone
I'll keep you posted, and thanks for all your help
Why should I not use the phone for a few hours prior to him/her coming

The following answers are assuming the problem is what I think it is and not something else

I think Orange are blameless here (at least for the fault developing if not for the way they've handled things since) as it's a physical problem with the line

As you've discovered, using the phone temporarily fixes the problem. In your case it returns as soon as you hang up, but in others the temp fix lasts a lot longer. Symptoms can also vary with temperature and humidity. It's not worth taking the risk of the problem being 'fixed' when the Engineer investigates. You want the fault to be easy to find.
I now have an internet connection. The engineer arrived yesterday as promised and checked my line. I asked if Orange are having problems and he said "Not that I'm aware of".
Anyway.... Turns out it was a line fault. He went to the exchange, no problem there, then climbed the telegraph pole outside my house and moved the wires. BINGO!!!
I asked about the HR dis fault and he just looked at me as if I was talking in a foreign language.
My father has a similar problem and is getting no joy with Orange. I don't think his is a line problem though as his BT line is crackle free and he doesn't have the problem with connecting when the line is in use. They are sending him a new modem.
If I get any more info on his fault I'll let you all know.
Thanks for all your help and for taking the time to reply and try and help me, and for listening to me whining on.
Thanks for letting us know. I'm pleased it's now working.

Probably checking synch at the exchange. Did he check at your property first?

Yeah, HR dis is usually a poor joint. He probably re-made the joints at the pole.

That's a little worrying. Maybe he didn't pay much attention during the 'theory' part of his training

It might be better to start a new thread in the appropriate forum for your dad's problem.

Thanks also for posting your full story here. I hope it's helped raise awareness of this issue. Many helpline advisers think that 'only able to synch when phone in use' is a filtering problem rather than a line fault.
