I've actually been getting connected to the internet better recently, but now I find I can get some sites (like this one, and Google) but not others (like Hotmail).
Is this an Orange problem?
In any case, all advice welcome from those more computer literate than I,
Thanks.
Thanks for your help!
This problem has only started in the last couple of days - never seen it before in five years with this laptop.
I can get this site, but not most sites - I cannot work out what the criteria for explanation might be.
I don't really understand the MTU advice, but is this a likely source when I had no problems till a few days ago?
Thanks again JHMP
It sounds like the MTU problem. It can just appear out of nowhere, there was a large number, compared to normal which is exremely rarely, that popped up a few weeks ago.
Thanks, Keith. Do you mean download one or more of these programs to CD or flopy disc and install on my laptop from there? I can do this myself at work if so.
Thanks again Keith (and others)!
I have downloaded onto both a CD and floppy (belt and braces).
Now I'll have to try to follow the tweak instructions in MTU settings above when I get home onto the troubled laptop.
As I'm a bit of an idiot, I may need more help then. I can see about the 1458/1430 figure, but wonder what else I would have to adjust ...
... (probably) to be continued!

It's quite straightforward, run the dslreports tweaktester first, that will tell you what your MTU/RWIN currently is (plus other stuff as well) then in the bottom left corner it will, if necessary, recommend the changes. It may well tell you that everything is OK but hopefully it won't !!
Well, as I thought, I have not found this straightforward.
Perhaps I could beg some more expert advice?
1. How do I run the dls reports tweaktester (remember I cannot access the site on my home laptop) ?
2. When one enters the help site above, there are a number of different options re 'download and use TCP' - the one I tried did not have an MTU value (say 1500) that I could alter. There is a blank box saying MTU.
Which is the program I should have downloaded at work and switched to home?
3. (Keith) what do you mean by copy and paste onto hard drive? I also tried running the Network Optimiser but it appeared to have no effect.
4. Thanks everyone for all your help. I wonder though if I'll have to take my computer somewhere to have this tweaking done professionally. Any advice as to where might be able to do it?
Cheers JHMP

It was DrTCP if you have downloaded it open it go too the tweak tester HERE do the test and follow the instructions it will tell you what your present MTU etc is and will give you recommendations that you can go by then put the MTU value in the Drtcp restart your computer and run the tweaktester again using its recommendations till it comes up ok.

Ahh i see... he can try to access SpeedGuide.net see if he can access it you never know and click the link TCP/IP analyzer if not he will have to go by trial and error of the values thats been advised on here.

If JHMP can't access SpeedGuide or dslreports web sites then I can only think that, if it is an MTU/RWIN problem, the only solution is to change the setting in REGEDIT.
But it seems he may not be confident enough to do that......I know I would think twice !!
Can anyone provide a solution.....remember JHMP cannot access any useful (other than OrangeProblems) web sites ?
